It's been bugging me for weeks, maybe months now, and every time I think about it, I think that there's gotta be something that I'm not realizing.
I'm talking about the "housing market slump," or whatever buzz-term is given to the rapidly falling prices of houses in America. Every time I hear about it on the news or in the paper (like today's
Los Angeles Times) I'm told that the sky is falling, and there's much woe to be had because home values are dropping.
What I don't understand is why this is constantly reported as negative news. Sure, I know it's a bad time for anyone who wants to sell a house, I can understand that. But isn't this...also a bit of a good thing? Aren't low prices on homes supposed to be helpful?
Shouldn't this be good news to all of America's twenty-somethings who haven't been able to afford their own place to live? True, many people that are slightly older than me probably can't get into the high-paying career jobs that would give them enough money to afford a house. Still, if you play your cards right and work as hard as you can, shouldn't someone of this demographic be closer to getting a place to live?
("Work hard and you'll get what you seek"...isn't that part of the American Dream? Let me know if it's worked for you yet.)
I'm just hoping that by the time comes for me to look for a home, I'll be able to find one that's practical and affordable. With home prices being what they were, I couldn't even fathom coming to own one, especially here in Orange County (where every teenager is supposed to be rich, as the shows say).
There has to be something that I'm not understanding. This optimism sounds way too irrational to be validated. What is it...
