DNC thoughts from a mere mortal, redux

Unfortunately, I missed Hillary's speech the night before last...but I DID watch coverage of last night's events, including Senator Biden's speech, and Senator Clinton's call for delegates to throw their support behind Senator Obama.

I thought she handled the events with class and dignity and did an excellent job rallying the troops. I like her. I'd considered voting for her early. But there were answers she gave to questions important to me that just didn't sit right. However, I still admire her and respect what she's accomplished this year.

It was difficult to not get caught up in the moment and feel a little emotional. I will probably write about all this in a tangible journal or something, just for my kids and grandkids to reflect on later. Regardless of how one might feel about the candidates and various policies and ideas, one can't ignore that the winds of change are blowing....and it's about time....and frankly, I think the time is right. Could a Democratic primary with an African-American man and a white woman have even been POSSIBLE ten years ago? Would it have been likely?

Following the philosophy of "hey, this is the way we've always done it and this is just what it is, so why shake things up?" just isn't working nationally or globally anymore.

I will admit that before this week, I knew little about Senator Biden, but I did some reading and research. Overall I think he's an excellent choice for VP. And I was very impressed with his speech last night. I don't know who wrote it, but it didn't sound forced or contrived...it was brushed with indignation about the way the last few years have gone, he was respectful of Senator McCain, whom he called a friend, but at the same time drew the comparisons that needed to be drawn.

Yes, speaking at the DNC is playing for the hometown crowd. But there were Undecideds watching too...and some rabid Clinton supporters who are still pledging to either vote for McCain (gee, does the name Nader ring a bell?) or not vote at all (oh, suck it up already!).

I'm looking forward to tonight, and I DO plan to watch the RNC too, just in case someone is thinking I'm a tunnel-visioned, tree-hugging, candy-ass liberal. ;-)
