Prrrobably not the brightest idea...engaging surge protector and hoping for the best.
Our Northwest Ohio Writers' Forum meeting today was about web sites and blogging and podcasts and I've been thinking....
I have an idea for (what I think would be) a cool blog. It would be a bit of work...but would serve as an online writing sample that I could actually let THE PUBLIC read ;-) versus the random acts of silliness I dabble with here...and would give some small business owners/friends of mine a little free publicity that their businesses/hobbies/persons richly deserve.
Before I go off half-cocked, I should do some planning.
Before I go off half-cocked, I should probably finish my own damn web site before I start working on something else!!
The Freelance Road has not been easy. But the growing pains have helped me learn what I will and WILL NOT do for money (or for free, for that matter). I've learned that I do better with "short burst" projects -- like web content, brochures, and articles or essays -- rather than content editing manuscripts. I run out of patience and/or motivation. If I do manuscript editing, I'm better suited for being the "detail person" -- giving a solid draft (whether second, third or tenth) a read-through, checking for grammar and punctuation errors and pointing out continuity issues, versus structuring and arranging the whole thing!
I also really like voiceover work and I need to do more of it...not just commercials selling diamond rings and local universities, but narrating documentaries or audio books.
I've also discovered that I really like graphic design and designing logos, so I need to get the necessary software to be able to do that more regularly, relying less on wizards and templates and being able to do it from scratch. (Yeah, guess who's going to need a small business loan to pull off THAT!)
I'd resisted doing "consulting" work of any kind, but I seem to be doing that by default, which is kind of weird. I have to figure out how to work that into the overall scheme of things.
And, of course, I have three or four other ideas rolling around like tumbleweeds in my head, and precious little time to work on them.
It's gotten gray and rainy, and while it's soothing to listen to the rain....it's also making me drowsy. :-p
Less than two hours till Prairie Home Companion...I suppose I'd better do a "fridge check" and see if I need to pick up anything for dinner.
Note to writerly types: check out the Writers' Digest interview with Diablo Cody, the screenwriter for "Juno." I have to add her to my "List of People I'd Like To Have as Neighbors."
