I made this icon for the challenge

Go from this cap (click for full sized):
to this icon:
This tutorial is very detailed and image heavy, beware!
First, decide what image you want to use as a base. I used this base by
colorfilter:
Other users with great bases are
gender,
ashke_icons or
blimey_icons. We'll come back to the base in a bit.
Now, open the photo(s) you want to use. You're going to want to crop the image the way you want it. Use the selection tool
to select the part of the image you want to use, for example:
Repeat for the second selection. Resize the selections (if necessary) to fit onto the base.
Usually, making the images half the size of the base (so 50 px), or around this size, works best when you are going to rotate the images, as we're going to do.
Copy your first resized image. Go back to your base image. Paste it as a new layer on top of the base. Repeat for second resized image.
Use the deformation tool
to rotate
the first image to the desired position.
The arrow points to what box will rotate the image if you click and drag. Do the same for the second image. Once they are both rotated, use the mover tool
to drag them into the desired positions:
You're going to want to make the base layer invisible temporarily:
Then right click on one of the image layers and merge it.
Layers 1 and 2 should now be one layer. You can make your base layer visible again by clicking on the glasses again. Now it's time for coloring the two rotated images. For my images I duplicated the image layer (right click on the merged layer and go to duplicate) and then desaturated the copy. To desaturate:
The copy should now be black and white. Set this layer to soft light:
The change in color is subtle but I like it.
Using the magic wand tool
click on any part of the blank space around the images:
Invert the selection:
Create a new blank layer (
on the layer palette) and then fill
it with a gradient of your choosing.
I used this gradient I made myself:
Now set that layer to multiply the same way you set the black and white copy to soft light. Go to Selections > Select None to get rid of the selection.
Create a new layer.
Use the line tool
to draw an outline around the images in the coor of your choice, mine was white.
Create a new layer.

See, really not that hard once you get to know your Paint Shop tools. =) Please reply with questions, comments, or any icons you made with this tutorial.
