"Atanarjuat: The fast runner" is a film that I saw a few weeks ago, and took my sweet time posting about it.
I thought it was shot wonderfully. Really good camera angles, captured and conveyed the emotions visually: urgency or desperation, passion* or just calm moment between lovers. They also did a good job at capturing the raw beauty of the north.
In the first 20 minutes I could not get enough of the sounds. I kept on thinking, “This is what real winter sounds like”. For the only sound “of the outside” is some dogs barking and the squeaking of the snow with each step.
I loved the white expanse. There was something calming and strangely familiar about it. Even though I lived in Siberia for a little bit more than half a year, and was about 4 years old myself, somehow these memories of the white landscape imprinted in my mind.
Lessons to learn:
The film certainly teaches, if on a basic level, how important it is for us to stick together.
Whenever and wherever you are (even in the icy fields), to a mother her songs will remain her little boys even if they are grown men.
Siblings are important, if nothing else they will (at lest they should) be there for you. Be there for each other and in turn, count in each other.
An older brother, is an older brother for life.
Nothing beats an afternoon nap.
Betrayal, is betrayer, where (or when) you are.
If you want to live, you will run. Run as you have never run before. Your determination to survive will carry you on. And if you fall down, you get up sooner or later and walk. Even if you have to lean how to walk again.
Once a jerk, always a jerk. People do not change that fast nor that easy.
Once a b__ch, always a b__ch, same thing as above applies.
Kill once, and it becomes easier to kill after, whoever they might be (even, as in the case of the film, the killer’s own father).
One can show their power by exhibiting pity. ( and I think this was mentioned in “Schindler’s List” too?)
Do not fight, but remove the conflict away from yourself. (why waste your energy, right?) Forgive, but remove nonetheless.
*I do have to admit that this film had one of the most artistic lovemaking scenes that I had the pleasure to view. The whole focus was on the woman’s right hand. That is all you see. (Of course, what you hear is another matter). And I was pleasantly surprised to find out the truth, that things were different before the missionaries arrived.
