You guys. They're using the word landslide. It was a landslide.
I didn't start believing it until Pennsylvania was called. At 6:45 I made my way to a favorite local pub and settled in with beer and friends, and one hour and fifteen minutes later, they called it. When those numbers flashed on the screen there was this pause in the room - everyone seemed to have caught their breath, we were all looking at each other like, 'does that mean what I think it does? Really?' - and then the words "Barak Obama elected President" appeared, and we all just lost it. I was shaking. I laughed, I cried, I called my parents, I called my Emma. My dad answered his phone singing America the Beautiful. My mom answered the phone and told me she wasn't watching TV, so I got to tell her. I think Emma thought I was crazy.
A few minutes later we found out that Prop 8 was leading, and as of a few minutes ago the Chronicle called its victory. It's hard to be completely giddy about Obama, knowing that California of all states has just issued a major slap in the face to the gay community and their supporters, but as a Californian, I have to believe that this can't last. I know this state. I've lived here for 22 years. I've seen it knock down prop 22, I've seen it stand up for what is right. I've also seen it elect Gov. Schwarzenegger, but even he was against Prop 8, so there has to be some hope. Sometimes it takes time, but California is full of people who are passionate and crave justice. This is a setback, but nothing even approaching the end.
YOU GUYS. SARAH PALIN IS NOT OUR VICE PRESIDENT.
JOE BIDEN IS.
ISN'T THAT BEAUTIFUL?
