cos everyone knows that's how you get famous

'Sup people? So, for a change, I'm gonna talk about music. Shocking, I know. I never talk about such rubbish in here.

I was chatting about various music with the 'rents tonight, as it's been 50 years of Motown (I was thinking about doing a post about it, with a bit of music, bit of info, because Motown has been such an influential part of my life and musical tastes. Idk if anyone would be interested tho, or if it would just be me talking to myself about how awesome I think it is) and they're thinking of going to the big Motown tour that's happening in June (and I might tag along). And I got talking to my dad about Dave Dee, who died today. I bet no one else has even heard of him, but he was in a 60s pop band called Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Titch. Lol, a mouthful, I know. They did that awful Xanadu song that I hate, but some others that were pretty standard 60s pop. The point is, this dude was the same age as my dad. He's from the same area my mum grew up in and according to my dad, she and her friends used to go and see his band play in the local coffee shop or whatever, before they were famous.

I got talking to my dad about how that feels- a musician that you grew up with (not personally, I mean, but musically) and maybe you don't think about them for years, but you hear that they're died and it's a weird feeling. Made me all reflective about how many decades of modern music, let alone how many centuries in general, have brought us to where we are and how lucky we are to have millions of songs available to us at our fingertips to listen to, whenever we want. I don't think I'm making much sense anymore. But. Well. It makes me want to sit down and listen to music from all the people who aren't with us anymore.

Instead, I'm gonna offer up some new stuff. Well. Newer. Stuff I've been listening to lately that isn't bandom music.

Lily Allen- The Fear
I have a total unironic love for Lily. She doesn't try and be something she's not and her songs are so sarcastic and clever. I've always liked her music, but I have to admit my girlcrush on her started when I heard GWB last year (which I can upload if anyone wants to hear it) which was just fantastic and made me laugh so much (I mean, it has lyrics like you're just some racist who can't tie my laces. How could I not love it?). I like that she makes statements with her songs, and she's making one with this one too. I'd warn for swearing but, well, it's Lily. It's what she does and no one should be surprised, right?

The View- 5 Rebbeccas
The View are an adorable Scottish band who I've thought were kinda precious for a couple of years now, but I have to admit, it's the fact they have a song with the name Rebecca in it that makes me love them even more. Like, you have no idea how hard it is to find a song with my name in it that isn't sung by a Southpark Character (although I would LOVE an mp3 of that, except I've not heard it in forever). Anyways, that's why I listened to this song, but I just think it's brilliant. the first taste of heaven there was splattered on your screen floating with schemers and the part-time halloweeners and the Lochee team. I don't know what it is about the phrasing there, but I really like it.

Black Kids - I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You
Now, I know the Black Kids were one of the It bands of last year so I'm slow to jump on the bandwagon. But I just really love this song. If you need a reason to download it, the lead singer is a dude, and this song has the line you are the girl that I've been dreaming of ever since I was a little girl. Also someone I know but don't like once described it as 'too gay to listen to'. Which to me is a pretty good reason to give it a go.

The Brunettes - Brunettes Against Bubblegum Youth (BABY)
Okay, I know this is probably known as 'that song from the Hollyoaks trailer' but it's awesome. Their genre is listed as 'Twee Pop'! How adorable is that? I think it's just a lovely song, and also they're from New Zealand and I'm a sucker for the home team. Not a great deal of lyrics but I love to call you baby, my sugar, my honey, don't care if it sounds cliche is kinda cute, imo.

The Killers - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (live)
I know everyone's probably heard this but I had to share just in case. Because I cannot stop listening to it. It is as awesome as you're probably imagining- Brandon Flowers. Singing this song. IT'S MORE AWESOME THAN PRETTY MUCH ANYTHING.

Ahem.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy!

I'm gonna go and watch more of the 50 greatest Rock Videos on TV (Panic were 38, MCR were 34 and FOB were 25ish, I think). God, music, how do you make me so happy?
