Oh my god. OH MY GOD.
I just got back from seeing Gym Class Heroes at the Garage here in Glasgow. I desperately need a shower but more importantly I need to post and ramble about this.
So, I met up with
lokte at 6 (and she is absolutely lovely and I had the best time fangirling with her) outside the Apple store (I had been inside, but it was really bad and I kept lusting after the iPods. I miss Severus so badly. I need a Dylan). And then we wandered up Sauchiehall St in the direction of the Garage in search of food, and saw the queue outside where some very flamboyant looking fans were waiting. They we had a rather nice meal during which we discussed a multitude of fandoms, and then headed back down at about half seven, and promptly passed Disashi walking out. I kinda stared at him in surprise (I wasn't expecting it, okay?) and then grinned at him and he kinda nodded at us in what I'm sure was an 'Oh god nooooo' way even though he seemed perfectly nice, and I had to stop myself from going 'Congrats on the baby!' like the creepy stalker that I am.
The Garage, which I have never been to because it's basically a meat market type club and I am not an 18 year old fresher desperate to hook up with some dodgy Glaswegian dude- is pretty awesome.
The (presumably first) support was on, a guy called
Cosmo Jarvis who I thought wasn't bad at all. We only heard a couple of his songs, but you should listen to 'Jessica Alba's Number' which contains lines like and she'd say 'hit me baby one more time' and I'd say 'No way Britney, domestic violence is a crime which made me laugh.
Next up was some dude called Professor Green, who seemed to be well known enough for some of the people round us to know the words, so it may be me failing at my white-dude-hip-hop knowledge. I wasn't terribly impressed by all of the 'HEY LADIEZZZZZZZ' stuff, and the most interesting thing that happened was Travie and Eric appeared on the balcony and started dancing along. I ended up pretending to look at the stage, but pretty much watched them. Much more entertaining.
Anyways. Then Gym Class came out and OH. MY. GOD. It is possible I am a little bit in love with every single one of them.
Here's where it gets a bit hazy, because I'm all gjkfhgjkfdshglfdhg about it still, but they started with Clothes Off and god, the energy in the room was fantastic. I'm going to get this out of order but they also played:
* The Queen and I (which the crowd LOVED)
* Cupid's Chokehold (Travie sang several verses of 'Cupid, draw back your bow...' -that I want to say is a Sam Cooke song, but I suspect has been sung by many, many people- as a lead in, unaccompanied)
* A Papercut Chronicles Medley that included Papercuts, Simple Living, To Bob Ross With Love and the entirety of Taxi Driver (I was so happy. I love that song so freaking much)
* On My Own Time (which is one of my favourite songs and I didn't expect them to play it and oh maaaaan that made my night)
* Shoot Down The Stars (Travie made us make our hands into guns and put them in the air)
* New Friend Request (another big hit with the crowd)
* Viva La White Girl (Travie did this whole spiel about how in the States they think this is
about cocaine because people there are 'touched' and that it's about being addicted to music, and he asked how many of us can't survive without music and we were all o/)
The played some songs from the Quilt (which apparently doesn't drop here til monday? I did not know this, but there were a handful of people around us who knew all the words too, so I didn't feel too weird about singing my heart out through all the songs) including:
* Peace Sign/Index Down(which was amazing and everyone was so into it)
* Blinded By The Sun (I hope
loveyouallwrong couldn't hear me singing along /o\ I maybe got really excited)
* Cookie Jar (obviously another big hit with the crowd)
* Live a Little (Travie talked about his detox, how he was on pills for 10 years and how he's been off them for 7 months, but he still smokes the fuck out of weed and still drinks the fuck out of some Strongbow-
lokte and I both turned to each other at that point and went 'Strongbow?!?!?' which was hilarious- and how it was their fans and his band who helped him through it. I stopped myself from shouting 'And Pete Wentz'.)
* No Place To Run (Which was the encore song. Disashi singing! All of them being absolutely amazing!)
ALSO! They did When Doves Cry, which included Travie talking about Prince and a suit with ruffles and putting a rose between his teeth and crawling towards us.
And also Time of the Season by the Zombies, which has firmly cemented my love for GCH as my third favourite bandom band. I can't get over how amazing they were. God, it was just amazing. Eric is so freaking hot. When did he get so hot? He was singing along and looked so happy to be up there. Disashi is amaaaaazing and he had several guitar solos in various songs and he's just fantastic! And at one point Travie went over and they shared Disashi's guitar and played together. And Matt. Oh Matt. Your tattoo still weirds me out (nipples!!!) but it's possible you might become my favourite drummer because you're so happy. So. Freaking. Happy. Everytime I looked at him he was grinning his little head off and it was adorable.
About halfway through Travie says 'I bet you're all wondering where DeJesus and his flag are' and then he goes something along the lines of 'and I bet you're wondering who this dude on keyboards (I think?) is! Let me introduce you to a new member of Gym Class,
Tim William!' and this guy came over and they asked if we'd seen Back to the Future and to imagine we were in our prom outfits and then they sang together and did this hilariously adorable dance that I hope someone has on video.
Travie seemed to be rivalling Gabe in the 'touching himself up on stage' stakes, cos he put his hand down his pants halfway through the first song. He kept saying things like 'no matter what anyone says, you are ALL sexy to me'. Also he'd obviously taken advice from the Nick Scimeca house of fashion, since he was in a green lumberjack shirt and hat. Also he is really hot in real life. And massive. So big. I'm kinda in awe of him.
And. Okay. I think that's everything! Wow, rambles! I cannot wait to see them again on Friday and TAI on Monday, again with
lokte is going to be fantastic, I can just feel it!
While I'm on the topic of GCH- has there been any uproar about their different sound on the new album, or is that kind of overreacting bullshit only in Panic and FOB camps? I really freaking love The Quilt, btw, and I'm all disappointed I'm going to have to wait until next week to buy a copy. Tomorrow, however, my hunt for a hard copy of FTABH continues! Hope everyone had an awesome night!
