I forgot about this in my squee, but a discussion arose at work over lunch and I thought it would be interested to talk about it here.

So, over lunch, one of my colleagues remarks that her fiance (who has a PhD in Maths or something) has never see Star Wars.

Which resulted in a collective dropping of forks, choking on food etc etc, because how can someone (particularly, you know, a fellow GEEK) never have seen Star Wars?

This led to a discussion about what films/books/bands are essential viewing/reading/listening.

So, my question: What movie/book/band makes you go O_o when you hear someone has never seen/read/listened/heard of it?

Also, is anyone out there a super awesome wiz with LJ layouts? And would be willing to make me one (and tell me how to use it)? Cos I'm sick of having a boring LJ but I lack the skills to make anything pretty. I pretty much know what I want (ish) and would worship at the feet of anyone who'd help me out.
