Well, after getting Matt up and ready for school (which he'll admit is no easy task), he suggested that we go to Point Pleasant Park and on a date. I, of course, had no objections.
Once Matt got back from classes, we had lunch and relaxed a little before going to catch the bus to go downtown. We ended up having to walk quite a ways through some residential areas to get to where the Park is. For those of you under the notion that Canada is cooler, it's not. At all. In fact, I think the temperature was one of the warmest I've ever experienced. Absolutely insane. Add to that the stifling heat the fact that very little to no breeze was blowing and it was even worse. Anyway, Matt and I were both rather thirsty, so when we spotted a corner store across the street from the Park entrance, we went there. We each got a bottle of water, then headed for Point Pleasant Park.
Now, most parks you'd think you don't need a map for, but this is not one of them. This park has paths/trails that lead various places, and it has defensive structures, which warrants having a map. Unfortunately, they were out of the smaller maps, so we had to depend on the larger maps that were seen every once in a while.
Our first stop in the sweltering heat was the Prince of Wales Tower. Not overly small, but not that large either. The nice thing about it was that it was very nice and cool inside. This is most likely mainly due to the fact that it was used to store ammunition and gunpowder. After that, we continued on the trails and checked a few other defensive structure type places, which I thought was neat since I'm into historical things. Matt ended up getting a nice picture for me of the ocean as well, not to mention the other pictures we took, of course.
After awhile, we ended up coming to part of the outskirts of the park and found a concession stand. Matt and I were both really hot and tired and decided this might be a good idea. As a result, Matt ended up with a banana split ice cream cone, and I ended up with orange sherbet on a cone. We had to eat them fairly quickly due to the heat, but they were good. As we were eating those, we stumbled across a beach. It was small, but kinda cool - lots of clam shells, which reminded me of the French River. I would've loved to put my feet in the cool water, but it wouldn't have worked as I had socks and shoes on. First off, probably a good idea to wear 'em since we were going to be doing a lot of walking, but also I had worn my sandals on friday and ended up scraping up my foot, so it hurt to wear the sandals any more. Anycase, it would have been nice, but oh well. We saw quite a few seagulls sitting on the nearby rocks too.
After that, we continued on next to the shoreline following the trail. We saw the Sailor's Monument, which is really neat - on top of it is a cross with a sword on it. It was around there that Matt and I decided to walk along the shore on the rocks. Matt felt a little bad that I didn't get to actually see or go on the ocean the other day, so he figured this was the next best thing. He ended up getting a picture of me touching the ocean for the first time. I've never seen/been to/touched the ocean til my trip. I collected a few neat rocks from the ocean, then the tide was coming in some, so we kept going.
By this time, it was just getting unbearably hot. Matt was out of water; I had some but it was warm already. Normally I do fine in warm weather, especially since I prefer it to cold weather, but I wasn't this time. The heat just drained all the energy out of me. I kept going, but I felt like I was going to faint. Matt stayed close and made sure I was okay. We did see this kinda need little waterfall someone had made coming off of a rock to the side of the trail, and some other rock formations with some trees that reminded me of the French River. Eventually we got out of the park and headed for the bus stop to take us downtown.
While waiting for the bus I noticed that I had gotten *very* sunburned. Very light skin + no screen + sun = sunburn. I figured I'd pick up some aloe vera later on to put on it. After walking around the shopping center for a bit, I decided I'd like some ice cream with my dinner, so Matt and I decided to head for McDonald's. Of course, I was dumb and had thought there was a McDonald's in the shopping center, which there wasn't. Since neither of us is a fan of McDonald's (assuming there's an alternative), we decided to go to Dairy Queen. Mmm.
We went and ordered our food, then sat down. I got ice cream, but Matt didn't since Dairy Queen's soft serve ice cream doesn't do well with him. It tasted rather good to me. Yummy. Anyway, Matt was being silly and put fries in his mouth so he looked like a walrus, which I of course got a picture of. Course, he then got a picture of me icing my shoulders, literally. I'd finished my drink and took the ice and rubbed it on my shoulders, cause they were really burned - if you touched my shoulders, you'd feel the warmth. Then Matt decided to melt an ice cube with salt. We were both being pretty silly now that I think about it....
After dinner, we headed back to the shopping center to the movie theater, which is, oddly enough, underground. It's the one that Matt used to work at. We were deciding between Wedding Crashers, Dark Water, and Fantastic Four. Fantastic Four won out. Technically we got the tickets before dinner, but meh. Anyway, Matt ended up getting some nachos and cheese, and a HUGELY GINORMOUS pop that comes with refills. How someone could want a refill after that is beyond me. The nachos looked really good, but I was too full from DQ to have any, unfortunately. I did get a few sips of the pop though. The movie was pretty good, in my opinion. It left a HUGE opening for a sequel. The name escapes me at the moment, but the guy who played Dr. Doom is really cool - I remember him from Profiler and Charmed. It sorta felt to me like something was missing, but *shrugs*. Still very good.
Once the movie was over, we went to the bus stop to find out when the bus was coming. Since there was still time, we headed down to one of the Pharmacy type stores to look for aloe vera. Apparently in that store aloe vera only comes in once size. I didn't need that much, but since it was the only kind, and I knew my shoulders would need it badly, I got it. After that we took the bus back to Matt's apartment.
We ended up watching I, Robot in Matt's room. Unfortunately we had to deal with the dying dvd player as well, which kept screwing up, but we watched it. Matt ended up rubbing my shoulders with the aloe vera, which felt rather nice on my sore shoulders. After all that, we ended up going to bed to get some sleep.
