So let's recap today's trade activity:
Footer for a first-rounder either this year or next, depending whether the Avs make the playoffs, plus a conditional 4th-rounder. An extra first-round pick is always good, but if we want it this year we have to root for the Avs to get in the playoffs, even if it means bumping us out? Okay.
Fedorov to the Caps for a college defenseman so obscure that no one can figure out if he goes by Ted or Theo. I predict he never pulls on a CBJ sweater. But then again:
31. D Theo Ruth, 6-1 205, 2-14-1989, USNTDP 39 gp - 5 g - 11 a - 16 points.
++ Character, take charge attitude
+ Athleticism
- Doesn’t do any one thing exceptionally well.
This Notre Dame recruit has the type of character scouts drool over and won a lot of teams over with his impressive performance at the combine. Talk to any of his current or former teammates and they just rave about him as a person. Theo is also an impressive package on the ice as he is at least average at everything but does a few things above average as well.
Plenty of heart and character, and only marginally talented at hockey. Sounds right up the CBJ's alley, actually.
And....that's it. It's great we dumped our two huge albatross salaries, but what about getting something in return for all these other free agents we're supposedly not re-signing? I'm guessing that if we only got draft picks and prospects for future HOF-ers, then our marginal players weren't even worthy of consideration by other teams. Perhaps Vyborny to the Rangers for 49% ownership of a Tim Horton's franchise on Staten Island and a factory-second Manny Malhotra Rangers replica sweater was an insulting offer even for Blue Jackets' management. But at least he'll get to fuck off back to the Czech Republic in April having played only for the Jackets.
Perhaps Howson has an eye toward the free-agent market in the summer; maybe Brad Richards doesn't sign with Dallas and we get him in July. But it would have been nice if it didn't seem like he was calling uncle on this season. On the other hand, you know what happens if we get Richards--he scores like eight goals and gets traded for a 6th-round pick a year from now, because that's what happens to All-Stars when they fall into the Columbus Triangle.
EDIT: Actually it doesn't look like Richards was ever selected to an All-Star Game, but you know what I mean.
