I don’t know if anyone has been following “Last Comic Standing” as closely as I have. I caught last season after the fact on Comedy Central, and now I’m addicted to this season. I got all of my coworkers into it too. If you haven’t heard of LCS, it’s an NBC reality show hosted by Jay Mohr, formerly of SNL. It puts stand-up comics through trials (such as having them perform in a laundromat or in front of 4-year-olds). They do the Big Brother/Real World thing of living in close quarters, and, of course, madness ensues. Normally I don’t do the reality shows, since people are idiots and overreact when they’re camera-happy. They're cheap and overdone. But this is the exception to the rule.
Life’s full of enough stress that a show designed to make one laugh is ideal. I like being around people who can make me laugh too, which is probably why I act ridiculously around my close friends. So tonight is the 2 hour season finale (at 8/7 central)! It’s down to 3 guys: Alonzo Bodden, Gary Gulman, and John Heffron. Alonzo likes to throw in racial jokes, which can be a little offensive (at least to my coworkers), but the rest of his material is hit or miss. He has his moments, but tends to look nervous and tense. Gary’s the so-called “good looking” one. He has the tall, muscular thing going for him, and my female coworkers love him. What I like about him is that his jokes are very relatable, and he uses coherent narratives(as opposed to Jay London’s unrelenting one-liners). Last, but not least is John Heffron. He’s adorable. He does the little kid act and is pretty goofy, which is probably why I like him the best. He’s a little hard to understand when he mumbles. I really couldn’t choose among these three. They’re not as polished as professional comics, and their material could use some variety. The guys are “uniformly moderately funny” is how I’ll put it. It’s going to be an interesting show, though, since I really can’t predict it. If you’re bored, check it out!
