Today I watched Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado (a satirical operetta) with the family. It’s my dad’s favorite of the G & S works. He even sang the songs under his breath on the car ride to the concert. (We’re a pretty musical bunch, with each of us playing an instrument and being able to carry a tune.) Anyway, you’d think he’d be pumped to see the performance. Well, my dad has the habit of falling asleep and snoring loudly in the middle of events in dark rooms. This time was no exception. I don’t think he’s ever seen a movie in its entirety, even the 1.5 hour ones. My sister and I kid that we should leave him in the car or lobby of theaters instead of wasting ticket money. He’s always astounded by the “new” scenes in movies that we watch frequently at home. The timing of the drowsiness usually doesn’t correspond to the level of climactic action in the performance either. He can fall asleep during the most deafening fight/war sequences. I don’t think it’s a form of narcolepsy or ADD. Maybe being a spectator is just soporific for him. So I thought I’d share this peculiarity and see if anyone had similar experiences.
Update on a previous entry: Remember my friend who forced a racist book on a little girl at his work? Well she returned it to him, unread. There's a shocker.
