I am going to an 80s prom next Saturday night.
Now, being born in 1975, I never went to an 80s prom. My prom was an early-nineties prom, thank you very much. But I did go to a couple of junior high dances that were legitimately 80s.
Ten Things I Remember About Those Dances
- Dreading quick songs because I wasn't sure I could dance without looking like an idiot.
- Dreading slow songs because I wasn't sure I would have a partner and then I would look like an idiot.
- Not knowing where to put my hands during slow dances when I did have a partner.
- Not knowing how close I was supposed to stand to my partner
- Not knowing just what was going on with my dance partner's anatomy (figured that one out lately).
- Singing along to Guns n Roses' "Sweet Child o' Mine."
- Singing along to Alphaville's "Forever Young."
- Being outwardly shocked and inwardly delighted when they played "I Want Your Sex."
- Being secretly tickled when they played "Stairway to Heaven" because it starts slow and ends fast and I was convinced none of my peers knew that.
- Not being able to find a dress that fit me.
I went shopping for an 80s dress today. Six thrift stores later, I have found some things never change.
Now they better play "Stairway to Heaven"
