Relay for Life

The Relay was stormed out last night. They were just getting ready to start, and it started to lightning. So they moved everyone in the park district building to be safe. As we were moving it started to rain really hard, and then shortly after that the tents started flying and collapsing. The camping tents that people had set up were fine, but the canopies that had been set up were done for.

There was supposed to be breakfast provided by a local restaurant at 12:30, but they moved that up to 8:30 and then had closing ceremonies at 9:15. Once we were inside the rec center there were speeches from survivors and doctors and such, and they projected the survivor names on a wall. At the closing ceremonies there were more speeches and then, because there wasn't a suvivor lap or a caregiver lap, we all joined hands for a moment of silence and then sang Amazing Grace. Which was a little Kumbiyah for my tastes, but whatever. I was home by 10:00.

I'm a little disappointed, to be honest, because I was really looking forward to spending the night. We did it last year (the group from work) and had a lot of fun. But, Safety First. And it's not like just because they didn't do the relay they won't get the money. And this way, I still have a weekend. I'm not exhausted from being up all night and unmotivated to anything but nap and veg on the couch.
