My friend Carla is a writer who, in addition to penning short stories, teaches writing courses at my alma mater. She has asked me to come and give a lecture on the topic of Fan Fiction for her college students. I'm looking for your thoughts, opinions, and comments regarding the FF genre of writing.
Do you consider Fan Fiction a type of literature? What -- besides the obvious fact that FF is based on characters that already exist -- differentiates FF from other forms of fiction writing? For those of you who also write original fiction, how do you regard FF? Is it a valuable use of your skills as writers or does it distract you from novels/short story manuscripts and so on?
What do you think of the comments you get at LJ versus comments at FF.net? What do you hope to achieve from writing FF and publishing it online?
All feedback on the topic is welcomed.
