So today I had a conversation with my father about the devastation caused by Katrina. He told me about how one of the floating casinos in Biloxi crushed a hotel when the waters receded. Since hearing that I've been looking at pictures online. Yes, New Orleans is underwater, but I haven't gotten to one yet that truly exemplifies that. It is the pictures of Biloxi that bring tears to my eyes. The Treasure Bay Casino, that I could see from my hotel, is gone. It was this grand pirate ship on the water with a fort-like structure in front of it. The fort is gone and the ship has been gutted. That has been the most powerful picture for me, so far. I was their, I knew what that area looked like and it is gone.
New Orleans is a whole other story, as far as I'm concerned, they've been lucky. Not with this hurricane mind you. But when was the last time that they got hit this badly? Which leads me to my next point. WHAT THE HELL WERE THE FRENCH THINKING??? Let's establish a city that is only possible by the creation of levees and resides below sea level. Brilliant. I mean, Lake Pontchartrain is huge, but only on average 11-12ft deep. Once it over flows that water has to go somewhere- New Orleans.
My heart goes out to all those effected, especially those still trapped under there roofs, with no way out. I fear for their safety. New Orleans will be evacuated for who knows how long. It is sad, and New Orleans already smelled funny and wasn't that nice. Now it is just going to be worse. I know its historic, and I hope things can be preserved, but again, WHAT WERE THE FRENCH THINKING!? Well, that is all. I'm going to continue to look at pictures.
