Hey,
Finished this up a bit ago, but haven't had a chance to review it. Which is shame on me really because
Among Thieves by Douglas Hulick is a really good fantasy novel. As you might guess it's got a Thieves' Guild spin on things and while not quite up to snuff with The Lies of Locke Lamara, it's definitely in that category.
In the Empire's capital city of Ildrecca, Drothe works as a Nose for one of the city's many crime bosses. Essentially, he acts as a private investigator for the mob. Drothe gets double-crossed during a little bit of relic smuggling and his attempts to find out what happened lead him slowly down a path of murder, magic and mayhem.
The world-building isn't laid on too thick, but everything that gets used is really interesting. The Emperor is a man reborn into three separate re-incarnations providing a relatively steady and continuous rule. His position is secured by the Angels who are apparently all that's left after the gods died. Most of this high-level stuff is dropped casually here and there, though. Drothe plays at a much lower level and here Mr. Hulick builds up a web of criminal activities and organizations. There's some magic to be had, but it sits much closer to the sword end of sword and sorcery.
If you're hankering for a little criminal investigation, Among Thieves is well worth a look.
