So I just discovered Sapphire and Steel, a short-run British TV series.
The basic plot is that two extraterrestrial (extra-dimensional) Operatives show up to investigate and resolve breakdowns in time. It's got a heavy dose of creepy and the plots are pretty cryptic. You can find the shows on YouTube and they're well worth sitting through. It's not a glitzy show, but they got every penny out of their minimal budget and the results are possibly a lot better than if they'd had a lot of cash on hand.
