I am on a mission to abolish marriage. Don't worry. If you're already married then you cannot fall victim to grandfathering. If you aren't married, then hurry up because I am thinking it will only take a few years to fix this up once I get things going.
I was listening to NPR this morning when it hit me, "They are able to pass their stupid marriage amendments based on the Bible because marriage is based on the Bible."
The preacher's words this morning rang loud and clear: "The Bible says marriage is between one man and one woman", which funny enough is the exact wording of these marriage amendments popping up all over our nation.
I can respect the Bible and those who believe in it (to a certain extent for the latter given the majority's recent conduct), but I also respect our Constitution which calls for the separation of church and state. We all know this.
So I ask this question: If marriage is of a religious nature and this country is supposed to separate church and state then why is anything to do with marriage written into our government?
It should not be.
Believe me. I understand the need for marriage. It helps people merge their assets, take care of each other in emergency situations, and raise the same children. That is why I say "marriage" in the Biblical sense should be up to the church only.
If people want something for legal necessities it will be named "civil union" or something akin. If you're religious then by all means go to your church or what have you and be wed by some preacher, but if you want something recognized by the government it will be conducted outside of the church much in the same way marriage licenses are done now.
If Christians are going to use the wording of the Bible to change our constitution then know that I will be using the wording of the constitution to back fire on them.
There are plenty of intelligent, powerful, and determined people on my side of the "marriage amendment" issue and that number grows greater with each passing generation. You can try to stop progress and perhaps you can even slow it to a dull stammer, but it will keep going onward. That's why it is called progress, and progress is written into the very fabric of everything humanity does and will continue to do.
Writing these marriage amendments is forcing a religion on to the American people.
Same-sex couples want the same stability and recognition for their children that heterosexual couples do. We are trying to raise families in a world where sometimes peace is hard to come by. Sometimes ignorance causes pain or worse. Sometimes good people do harmful things out of fear.
Fear does not rule this country. We are a free nation and may we continue to be.
