My first day at the museum was quite productive and I'm pleased with the job. As it turns out, I am interning solely under the Director of the museum. I thought I'd just be the office bitch and everyone would use me where needed, but my role is to learn how to raise money for a museum and I'm learning it from the head guy. Since this is a small museum there is no development dept. (as of yet), so the Director is a big multi-tasker and deals with things rather ad hock. Today I drafted a few letters to potential sponsors for our education department's younger learning program and brain stormed and researched other free money routes. I wasn't bored for a minute and I didn't even miss lunch all that much, though I was starving when I left at 4.
My schedule looks pretty good for this Fall:
Mondays: 2-5, Art of the South Seas class
Tuesdays & Wednesdays: 10-4, internship
Thursdays: 6:30-9, Conservation class
Fridays: free for research or 3-day weekend get-aways, nice.
I'm glad I wore what I did, btw. According to the dress code, sleeveless shirts and tightly-fitting fabrics are a no-no (I just bought two sleeveless tops specifically for work). Also, visible tattoos are out, which means if I want to wear a skirt I might need to invest in some stage makeup. Luckily my (seven) earrings are ok but my hair could boarder into bad territory if it fades into an abnormal(er) shade. Man. When did people who work in the arts become such boring, drab, corporate slaves? I suppose when museums decided their target audience is people with MONEY, not artistically expressive tastes and personalities...
