on rugs and their being pulled out from under me

I didn't even KNOW the NY State Senate was voting on marriage equality today. S told me during a phone call at work (which momentarily reminded me of the time C delivered the news that Michael Jackson died, but that is neither here nor there). I was speechless. Today? Could it be?

But it could not. No sooner had I found a NY Times reporter live blogging the vote then the sad, cold new was delivered: 38 -24, against. Given the opportunity to right a historic wrong, 38 people in my state's senate decided to let this untenable situation stand. I wish I was surprised, but I'm not. The human race baffles me, but at this point in my life, it's failure to extend justice and equality to others has struck me as one of its more predictable shortcomings.

I am, however, heartened by Eric Adams, my district's senator. He gave an impassioned speech (http://www.nysenate.gov/video/2009/dec/02/senator-adams-speaks-same-sex-marriage-senate-floor-december-2-2009) and relied on interracial marriage discrimination and slavery as a touchstone. I have never been more proud to have someone represent me--he was intelligent, compassionate, and fierce. We lost today. Just today. Tomorrow we start anew.
