(an open letter to Broward County's Humane Society)

Attention Humane Society of Broward County:

This evening, while conducting a search of articles regarding well-being of animals displaced by Hurricane Katrina, I found your website, blatantly trolling for the adoption of "abandoned" pets from said disaster. I was repulsed. It is absolutely deplorable to give these animals to anyone besides their original families if they are still alive.

While many charitable organizations are raising funds, rescuing animals, placing them in temporary homes, and ensuring these animals' reunification with their owners, you are exploiting both two- and four-legged victims of the hurricane. If you were engaging in true philanthropy, your organization would house these animals while seeking out their families. Posting their pictures and sad stories to attract adopters rather than their true families is a damnable and unscrupulous act.

It is damaging to the animal just as much as it is to their human companions. The bond between a pet and its care-taker is obviously a concept your organization does not recognize, respect, or comprehend. While you distress the animal, you also further victimize those displaced and ruined by Katrina; for many, simply knowing their pet is alive and waiting for them to take them home would mean the world.

I will do everything in my power to make others aware of your grotesque practice. You are a shame to your charter and a sham in the eyes of true philanthropy. I hope you think very hard about what you are doing, but more importantly, I hope none of those pets move and that they are reunited with their TRUE families. You are sick, Broward County. There is nothing humane about you.
