Can You Supersize Ambition?

I'm back again.  I had fun with the format of the last entry, so once again I'll be taking the "short reviews" approach to just about everything that's happened to me since then.  Here goes...

Say Anything:  I've seen a fair number of concerts in my day, and this was one of the best, though it started with a whimper.  Opening band The Casual Lean was unimpressive to say the least; the singer couldn't seem to stay in tune and the music was all pretty generic emo.  Slik Willy came on next and salvaged the vibe, proving why they're one of the bigger bands in the Rhode Island scene.  Finally, Say Anything came on, playing just about everything from Is a Real Boy and a couple tracks from Was a Real Boy.  Max Bemis' stage banter was, as expected, alternately crazy and appreciative (quote of the night: when introducing "Little Girls" he asked "Are they're any little girls in the audience tonight?"  After the resultant cheering, he barked "Take 'em out!").  Even quirkier songs like "Wow, I Can Be Sexual Too" came out well in a live setting.  Props also go to guitarist Jeff (who Neil and I ran into on the street while walking to Lupo's from the mall) for playing a Fender Jag-Stang.  All in all, Say Anything = good live band.

Snakes on a Plane:  I missed opening night for this cinematic masterpiece, though after seeing a friend of mine called me and said, "It was the worst movie I've ever seen.  You've gotta see it."  And that, my friends, is just about the perfect review for this movie.  All I can say is just about everything that could get bitten was bitten.  Words fail.  This movie is destined to become a cult classic.  Now I just have to wait until they start filming Sharks on a Roller Coaster.

"Lights Out":  I recorded this song with Sean a little over a week ago, and it's currently in the mixing process.  This was one song that I regretted not having time to put on the original demo, so I'm pretty happy that it's on its way to becoming a fully-fledged MP3 that can be downloaded, duplicated, and generally sent out into the world.  It'll be up on the MySpace page as soon as I get the finished product.

Monty Are I:  This Rhode Island band put out their major label debut, Wall of People, at the beginning of the month, and it's a doozy.  Monty have never been known for their subtlety, though this is a good thing as it gives their music a kind of "power rock" sense of fun.  The only moment on the album that seems overblown is the final track "Only the Weak," which can only be justified if it becomes the theme for the next Rocky movie.

Freshman First Night:  This will be the first and last time I've actually been around to help out at the cofeehouse during this most hectic of URI evenings.  This Freshman class is as young as my brother.  So, who else is ready to feel really old?

Well, that's all I've got for now.  Until next time, push and push and push 'til it hurts.
