ALERT! & HELP?: Security Tool Viral Incursion

Nov 08, 2009 09:17

Okay .... thanks to some help from Corgi last night by phone, I have managed to get rid of that incursion of the "Security Tool" virus.

Then managed to update and run AVG antivirus, Search & Destroy, and Mal-Aware (or whatever it's called).  Rebooted as directed ....

And had a blank blue screen come up where my desktop should be.  O_o

So I rebooted, paying careful attention .... and all the cute/annoying MS startup sounds happened.  All of them.  WTF?!

So I tried, what the heck, Control-Alt-Delete.  And got the Task Manager!
Which tells me that everything is running properly, with the glaring omission of Windows itself, I think .... or possibly just the desktop gui portion of it.

Managed to figure out (yay me!) how to open the browser through the Task Manager ....  Now to see if it will let me get to the Microsoft page today ... because it refused to acknowledge the existance of any such URL last night .....

More as I know more ... and any suggestions and/or recommendations will be happily read and considered!  Please and thanks!

ADDITIONAL:  There is still something in this computer that pops sports and gambling pages from time to time; and which apparently prevents my browser from being able to find Microsoft.com ....  GAH.
