Distraction

Distraction

I've been walking a road, unpaved and uneven.
Loose rubble underfoot yet I walked
Without slipping, having known pain well.
I'd not cared for companions.
They'd have slowed me on my path for
vengeance and justice, unpaved and uneven.

Your warm smiles were surprising,
Easily given without judgement.
Your concern was unexpected where
I'd expected pity, unwelcome.
Then I'd found myself wanting to keep
You close, safe, mine. Then you called me friend.

And the road no longer seemed appealing
Vengeance seemed far, I found unminding.
I, no longer alone on my walk,
Bumped shoulders with you, fingers brushing,
And you said I was not alone, never again,
But my mission came a-calling.

I walked and left my heart behind.
I walked feeling your pained gaze on my back.
I walked a road, unpaved and uneven.
