I can't believe we're getting puppies. I still can't. I'm a wee bit puppy shocked and have been thinking the last few days about fairness. Is it fair to take in two puppies and momma dog, when we already have so many? Is it pure puppy greed on my part? Can they find just as good or better homes elsewhere?
To be honest, a bit of this comes from the reactions I'm getting from co-workers. "Don't you have enough?" Except.... no. I mean, yes. But, it's not so crowded that the animals are suffering. They're clean. They're fed *good* food (and we're toying with the idea of a raw diet for them). The only animal who is hugely overdue for shots is Orion and that's a size issue. Everyone else has had them within the last two years. They are well adjusted. THere are a few who like their own space, and they're allowed to have that most of the time. The dogs are confined when humans aren't home. I have a gut feeling that Princess is going to be overjoyed at meeting Honey, and I hope Honey is as sweet with the cats as we think she will be.
I know that Laure and I have the dedication and patience to teach puppies, and Honey, to potty outside most of the time. We've hauled out our dining room table and are in the process of converting a space of the dining room into a puppy nursery. Between Orion and Corbie the kitchen is full, and really we don't *use* the dining room as a dining room anyway. (Yeah, you try eating at a table with seven cats in the house. Besides, we had no chairs for it anyway.) Honey will give Corbie the companionship he wants and doesn't get from Orion, who is older and happy to be a slug-a-bed all day. The puppies? Well, I *want* puppies. And they're great. And I know that we 1) have the space and 2) have the resources. Does it cramp our lifestyle? Uh. We have a lifestyle? With so many already, we already can't just up and leave to go somewhere if we want to. THree more isn't going to change anything.
Are we insane? I don't know. But I'm excited, and I know we're offering a good home, and I know that we aren't just jumping into it without thinking first. So there.
