My evening with Keren Ann, Dean, and Britta

It only took me just over three years to do it, but I finally got out to see a club show in Minneapolis last night. I saw Dean & Britta, with Keren Ann as the opener, at the Cedar Cultural Center. I really needed to get out for the evening, and this was the perfect excuse.

I'm so very glad to see Dean & Britta achieve success post-Luna. Back ( Read more... )

The venue where this was held isn't terribly intimate, but it certainly wasn't big. I had a seat in the fourth row center, so I was close to the stage.

When they played "Ceremony," they made it seem at first like it was impromptu. Dean and Britta know how to play it, but it seems the keyboardist didn't, so that's what that was all about.

I recall only one French song in Keren Ann's set, and unfortunately it wasn't "Midi dans le Salon de la Duchesse" which I really love. I'd say her set was 2/3 from the new album and 1/3 from Nolita. I don't have the album before those, so I can't say if she did anything from that one.

If you can track down a copy of Men's Vogue, it has the excerpt from Black Postcards. It looks like it's going to be a good read.

I discovered Galaxie 500 completely by accident. I happened to see them open for the Cocteau Twins for what turned out to be Galaxie 500's last tour, and I'd never heard of them before. I was there with my sister-in-law, and I remember we saw a guy in a floor-length skirt. We sort of giggled about it, and then she got serious and asked me if I wore skirts. (The family hadn't known for very long about me being gay.)

The one part I remember the best was when they did "Listen, the Snow is Falling." That was what sold me on getting the CD, and I found it a week later in the cut-out bin at Camelot Music.

Did you see Tell Me Do You Miss Me?

Wow...you didn't know about Tell Me Do You Miss Me?

It's a documentary about Luna's final tour. It's very good! And yes, it's on DVD; I have a copy.

There's a also a 2-disc Galaxie 500 DVD called Don't Let Our Youth go to Waste. I have yet to watch all of it, though.

Oooh, almost forgot. They're selling a remix EP at the shows that can also be downloaded on the Dean & Britta site. I typically hate remixes as a rule, but these are actually pretty good. I did like Sonic Souvenirs.

And lastly, look for the hot daddy roadie. At least, I think he travels with them. Nice butt.
