Stargate SG-1: The Quest, Part I

I liked it, a lot.

That's all that really needs to be said, I suppose. However, since we in the US won't be seeing any more episodes for nearly six months, I should give the half-season a nicer send-off. So, here's why I liked it:

The new opening, with Vala included at the end. Did they use it last week and I missed it, or was this the first time? Either way, the acknowledgement that she's part of SG-1 now made me happy.

While we're on the subject, let's talk about Vala's choice of sleepwear. It made me laugh, especially the eye mask. If Daniel (or Teal'c, or Mitchell) came a-calling, you can bet that would disappear quickly. What happened to the little red number she showed Daniel last year?

P.S. There's a painting hanging above Vala's bed. She's done some decorating.

We didn't actually see them go through the gate, but the episode had "that feeling" anyway. It's probably because they were together, all friendly-yet-snarky-like, exploring a new world (well, searching for something, same difference). Ah, exploration, how we've missed you.

Okay, burning the books was heavy-handed... but a vivid demonstration of how the Ori want to suppress all learning except that which they give their followers through Origin. Has it occurred to anyone, most especially Adria, that the ascended Ancients allowed "lower" beings to grow and learn at their own pace, while the Ori want to be the source of all knowledge? Under what system could such backward evolution be defined as Enlightenment?

Morgan's landscape, with the time distortion field, non-treasure chest, riddles, and fake wall of fire, was very imaginative and fun. It required everyone to participate, too, instead of just doing whatever translator Daniel says they're supposed to.

Did you see that little pat on the shoulder that Vala gave Sam? And the way she practically fell asleep on Sam's shoulder? It does my heart good to see little moments of interaction between those two.

Ba'al definitely isn't the guy he used to be, but I have to admit, I was amused by his snarky attitude. Plus, he served a purpose in being there. So, rather than gripe, I just enjoyed watching the one-liners fly.

Old Osric turning out to be Adria didn't surprise me, since the director made it rather obvious that something hinky was going on. What I did like was her concentration on Daniel because he's a former ascended being. Thank you! That seemed rather important to me, too, and I was wondering why someone didn't make more out of it before now.

It seems as though Daniel and Adria are headed for a one-on-one adversarial relationship. This is actually something I called for quite a while ago, and it pleases me to see the writers going that way. After all, who better to oppose the Orici (human Ori) than a human who was once a member of the other side?

Most importantly, the entire episode held my interest. That certainly can't be said for all of the half-season cliffhangers, so it makes a welcome and happy change.

And was that really a dragon?
