To be, you can only be with one

Chapter 18

Pepa felt conflicted, she looked over at her daughter, who was still lying on the bed; a forced smiled adorning her lips, she couldn’t help it she was still concerned about her wife, even though Silvia seemed ok with her discovery it was yet another thing that had changed while she was away, while she was asleep ………. and Pepa still had this fear that Silvia would only be able to take so much before she would crack…………. or before it would all become too much for her. All she could do was to let Silvia know that she was there, that she would always be there.

Pepa spoke sweetly to her daughter; she needed to talk to Silvia to see what was really going on in her head, “carino, why don’t you go get some breakfast. Maca is in the kitchen and I will be there soon vale?”

“Vale mommy….” Mar jumped off the bed and excitedly ran up to Pepa, oblivious to the slight change of mood in the room. She stopped just in front of her mommy and tugged on the front of her towel. Pepa leaned down, she couldn’t help but replace her forced smile with a genuine one at her daughter enthusiasm as Mar whispered proudly in her ear, “Mommy, I talked to Silvia for us. She is going to stay mommy, she is going to stay!”

Pepa whispered back into her daughter’s ear, her smile still prevalent as her eyes fixated on Silvia, “I know little pelirroja, I know….” she hugged her daughter tightly.

They both pulled away and Mar’s gaze met her mom’s, “I did good mommy?” Pepa nodded, ‘Si you did my beautiful hija!” they grinned at each other in their own silent understanding. Without further action or thought Mar stood up straight and smiled innocently at Silvia before running out of the room, calling out for Maca.

Pepa’s eyes followed her daughter as she left the room, she shook her head in disbelief at Mar’s infinite energy, she wished she had half as much energy as her little pelirroja.

Once Mar had gone she hurried over and extended her arm to Silvia. Silvia looked up at Pepa, her expression unreadable, she gripped her wife’s hand and Pepa lifted her to her feet. Pepa immediately enveloped her in a warm tender embrace before pulling back, her eyes staring deeply into Silvia’s gorgeous brown orbs.

“Princesa, you know what……………………….” she leaned in and planted a soft kiss on her wife’s lips.

Silvia opened her eyes slowly, momentarily revelling in the soothing effect that just one kiss from Pepa had on her and she looked questionably at her wife, a small smile gracing her lips, “what?”

“I would be happy for you to go everywhere in nothing but this sheet.” Pepa smiled broadly.

Silvia shook her head and laughed, “Oh really? Well I will if you will Pepa?” she teased  before she stared into Pepa’s eyes, her laughter fading, “all my stuff…….it’s gone,” Silvia looked back at the closet devoid of her belongings, “is it all gone Pepa?” she looked questionably at Pepa with such vulnerability that it broke Pepa’s heart.

Pepa stared intently back at her wife, “It’s not all gone princesa. I kept some of your stuff, the things I knew were important to you, to me too, they are at your papa’s, I never would’ve got rid of everything Silvia……it was your stuff! I couldn’t keep it here though, too painful. We can go and collect it after we are finished at the precinct if you want to and go shopping maybe as well………………?” she questioned.

Silvia hugged her wife fiercely; grateful that she still had remnants of her old life to hold onto, “Thankyou Pepa…………… thank you for not forgetting about me,” she whispered in her wife’s ear.

“How could anyone EVER forget about you pelirroja!” Pepa responded as she reluctantly extracted herself from Silvia’s embrace and went into the closet. She grabbed a pair of blue jeans and a black tank top and emerged throwing them on the bed, she then proceeded over to her draws and grabbed a pair of panties and a bra, also throwing them on the bed, “I don’t know how they will fit but will these be ok until we can organise something more……permanent?” Pepa looked hopefully at the redhead.

As Silvia nodded Pepa disappeared into the closet one more time, this time emerging with a loose fitting jumper in her arms……………….that belonged to her wife.

Silvia recognised it instantly, it was one of her favourite snugly sweaters. Before Pepa handed it to her she pulled the garment up to her nose, closed her eyes and breathed it in, “hmmm, still smells just like you pelirroja!” she remarked as she threw it in Silvia’s direction, “that is the only thing I kept here, I knew how much you loved it ……………………..and sometimes I just needed to rem……..”

Silvia cut Pepa off with a soft lingering kiss. Pepa melted into her wife’s arms and eagerly reciprocated, her lips devouring those of her redheads, their tongues entwining in a smouldering passion.

Silvia was the first to pull away; her heart was racing and her breathing had become shallow, she needed to catch her breath. Pepa took the opportunity to lean further into her wife, taking a deep breath she let Silvia’s unique scent invade her senses, “dios, you still smell just like you too, nothing beats the real thing pelirroja!”

As Pepa opened her eyes the florescent light from the bedside clock caught her eye and she realised the time, “joder….we are so late pelirroja!” she gave Silvia one last quick kiss and slapped her lightly on the ass, “Hmmm, you jump in the shower and I will see you in the kitchen vale,”

“Vale Pepa,” Silvia shot Pepa a playful sexy smile before dropping the sheet and slowly making her way to the bathroom.

Silvia finished in the shower and promptly dressed. The jeans her wife had ‘leant’ her were way too long but they fit and the tank top hugged tightly in all the right places. It was too warm to wear the sweater but she wanted to take it with her, just in case……she felt like it was the only thing that belonged to her that she could hold on to right now.

When she was dressed she took one last look in the mirror, “Well I think you still got it Castro! You’re back where you belong and Pepa still loves you. Go get ‘em chica!” she gasped at the thought she just had, a cheeky grin adorning her face, ‘Mmhmm, I bet Pepa gave me these clothes on purpose, to show off certain areas of my…..er, assets? I think I may need to have a little conversation with my wife.’

She walked out into the hallway pondering that thought as she headed down to the kitchen to join her family. Along the way the bottom of the jeans unravelled and got caught up under her feet; causing Silvia to trip over falling with a thud on to the floor. She quickly picked herself up, dusted herself off and looked around, her face turning a bright shade of crimson. ‘Damn Pepa and those sexy long legs of hers,’ she thought as she saw Mar standing in the hallway staring at her, a bemused expression on her little face.

‘Well at least Pepa and Maca didn’t see my clumsiness’ she thought to herself as she stared back at the little pelirroja. Silvia put her finger to her lips as she looked at her daughter, her face a flurry of amusement, “Shhh….don’t tell your mommy about this ok.”

Mar nodded enthusiastically, “vale, vale;” they both started laughing uncontrollably as Silvia winked and scooped Mar up in her arms, carrying her off to the kitchen to join Pepa and Maca for breakfast…..

They wandered in still laughing, Pepa could hear them coming from the end of the hall. She smiled when she heard Silvia’s laughter; it had been too long since her life contained her pelirroja’s laughter. She turned to face them, “what’s so funny you two?” Silvia looked at Mar, her lips pursed tightly together and they stopped laughing momentarily.

She turned and discreetly put her finger up to her lips again; Mar nodded in understanding and started giggling; Silvia did too, “nothing Pepa…….it’s nothing, just me and Mar getting to know each other.”

Pepa furrowed her brow as she went over to her two girls, she knew they were engrossed in their own little ‘situation’ that she wasn’t privy too, but she didn’t care, Silvia and Mar were happy and that was all that mattered, “Oh really…………… vale,” it was then she noticed the snugness of her wife’s attire, “Wow, you look….um, amazing princesa,” her face lit up as she eyed Silvia up and down, wrapping her arms around her wife’s neck.

“What about me mommy? What about me?”Mar was feeling a little left out, she puffed out her chest and smoothed her top with her hand, the best she could in Silvia’s arms. Pepa pulled away from Silvia and smiled, kissing her daughter on the cheek, “You look very adorable too carino…..you always do!”

They arrived at the precinct later that morning, a few hours after they were supposed to. Pepa didn’t care though, if it was up to her she wouldn’t be there at all, she would still be at home, in bed ………….with her wife. Sub Inspector Fernando, the Tactical Response Team Leader from the day before, was already waiting for them, somewhat impatiently.

He immediately approached the two women as they casually walked, hand in hand, through the door, “Buenos dias Inspector Miranda. I have been waiting for you; are you ready for your debrief? We need to get started as soon as possible.” he stated formally, visibly annoyed that he had been waiting for the inspector all morning.

“Si, I’m sorry, we um, we lost track of the time Sub Inspector,” Pepa half heartedly apologised for their lateness, “let’s get this over and done with vale!”

Sub Inspector Fernando nodded and turned, heading to the interview room, expecting Pepa to follow closely behind. Before she followed him Pepa glanced up and down at her wife, one more time, in her tight fitting jeans and snug black tank top; the ensemble looked better on the redhead than it did on her. She really didn’t mean to give Silvia clothes that were a little snug for her, but she certainly wasn’t complaining.

She squeezed Silvia’s hand tightly and gave her a sexy smile; she leaned in and gave her redhead a soft, sultry lip lock. Pulling away a little breathlessly Pepa whispered simply, “I love you pelirroja. I’ll be right back vale….” Silvia returned the smile and nodded. Pepa scurried off after the sub inspector and disappeared into the interview room.

Silvia exchanged pleasantries with the hombres before making her way to her papa’s office. It became a somewhat arduous task for her as her colleagues cornered her. They all converged on the redhead and all spoke at once; she didn’t know who to look at or who to respond to first.

Rita’s was the overly excitable voice she heard first, “Silvia, Silvia, carino, do you have a minute to talk to your dear old friend? I really missed you…………..”

Paco followed, concern seeping through his words, “Are you ok Silvia? What happened to you? We all thought you were dead? Are you back for good? Are you and Pepa ok?”

Jose Luis was next, “How are you doing? Are you ok Inspector? Yesterday wasn’t a great day to come back home to!”

And Curtis came up the rear, “Anything you need, you just ask Curtis, I will help you with whatever you need ok pelirroja! Anything, anytime, day or night.”

Silvia stood there, an uneasy smile gracing her lips, she understood why they all had questions and was touched by their concern, they were all good friends, co-workers, family, they all cared for her; but right now all the questions seemed endless and……..overwhelming. All she wanted to do was to go and see her papa, see how he was doing, what he had been up to, if he was ok; she had not had the opportunity to do that since she had returned; there would be plenty of time for her to catch up with everyone else………… later.

She politely excused herself, “Gracias amigas, and amigos for your concern. I will tell you everything you want to know….. later, I will answer all your questions vale! Lo siento, I just need to see my papa right now. Have any of you seen him?”

They all went quiet and Rita responded, she understood completely, she was just so happy and excited that Silvia was back, that her friend was alive, that she didn’t care if it took …..a month, a year, a decade for the redhead to catch up with her, “Of course, of course mi amiga….we all understand. I saw your papa in his office about 10 minutes ago.”

“Gracias Rita,” Silvia smiled warmly and gave Rita a grateful hug before heading up the stairs.

She knocked and Don Lorenzo spun around in his gun shot riddled chair, the action almost causing him to topple off; he regained his balance and his face lit up the moment he saw his daughter standing at his doorway.

He eagerly stood up and limped his way to his daughter, hugging her tightly, “Hola hija, have you come to see me? Come sit down and talk to you papa…”

Before she took Don Lorenzo up on his offer, Silvia leant down and checked her papa’s gun shot wound on his foot, after all no matter how much time had passed she was still a doctor. While she did she looked up at him as a concerned daughter and smiled, “Papa, how are you doing? Are you ok? You look a little tired………..”

Don Lorenzo pulled his foot away, “Don’t worry about that Silvia, come….sit down and talk to me,” Silvia rose and sat opposite her father as he smiled gratefully at her, “as for me, I am wonderful….now, I am wonderful. How are you doing mi hija? You look just as beautiful as ever, a little thin, are you eating properly?”

Silvia stared intently at her papa, her brows furrowed in thought. She traced the new wrinkles on his forehead and cheeks with her eyes, the ‘worry lines’ that weren’t there before; she looked regretfully at the abundance of grey streaks taking over his hair and the heavy bags under his eyes, features of her fathers face that were unfamiliar to her, it was like all of a sudden, overnight he became an old man and she had missed it all. But he did look tired…..worn out, Silvia couldn’t help but be a little worried about her father, “Papa, I just got back; don’t worry so much about me vale! What about you?”

“I will always worry hija.  ”Don Lorenzo put his elbows on his desk and stared at his daughter, the daughter he believed for 5 long years he had lost……………. and she hadn’t changed one bit, she was exactly as he remembered her, the sweet, caring, redhead that was his youngest daughter, “I just ………I just can’t believe you are really here, you are really alive!”

Silvia smiled warmly at her papa and answered simply, “Si I am papa….”

“So tell me hija, what happened to you? How didn’t we know anything about you being still alive? I thought I had lost you…..we all thought we had lost you.” Don Lorenzo’s face became sullen, immersed in the memory of his grief.

Silvia leant over and took her papa’s hand, “I’m sorry papa; I came back as soon as I could!” Silvia could see the heartbreak in her papa’s eyes, “Where um, where is everyone else? I haven’t even seen Sarah? How is she doing?”

Don Lorenzo returned from his thoughts and treaded carefully in response, he didn’t want to be the one to inform his daughter of the fate of her friends, it was too soon, too much for her to take in right now, he wanted to protect her, “Sarah is on an undercover operation; but I am organising for her to be pulled out as soon as she is safe to do so. We cannot contact her yet, it would jeopardise her cover…………and her life.”

“Of course papa. What about Lola and Lucas and Gonzalo and Aitor and er…” Silvia paused momentarily, “there are a lot of new faces around here?”

Rita, Curtis, Paco, Mariano and Jose Luis all stood outside Don Lorenzo’s office, intently trying to listen in, wanting to over hear Silvia’s story, climbing over each other vainly in an attempt to get closer to the door, to hear what they were saying; they knew Silvia’s explanation was going to be a beauty.

“Si, I know. Lola is still in Barcelona but I’m sure that she will be returning as soon as she knows you are back, Lucas well he……………………” Don Lorenzo heard the mumblings at the door and interrupted his conversation with his daughter for a minute, “Excuse me hija, I just need to………….” he stopped mid sentence and opened the door.

As he opened the door Jose Luis tumbled head first into the room, the others almost followed right along with him. Jose Luis stood up immediately, “Lo siento commissioner, lo siento…..”

He looked at the bumbling officers and then at his daughter and decided to usher them all in, he knew they cared for his daughter too, and she may as well share her story with them all.

After Silvia had explained her absence the room went uncomfortably silent, her colleagues all sat still, in shock, in astonishment, in disbelief, lost in their own thoughts, attempting to process the information she had just shared with them; it felt more like a wake than a celebration of her return.

For 5 years they had thought the redhead was dead, that she had been murdered on what was supposed to be the happiest day of her life; they had dealt with their grief, had sought their revenge and although they would never forget her they had moved on; only to now find out she had been effectively kidnapped and held hostage. The silence that filled that room was…………….deafening.

Rita eventually broke the silence, she smiled warmly, “So……………um, Silvia, you met Pepa’s beautiful little girl Mar, isn’t she just adorable?”

Don Lorenzo interrupted proudly, “Si, she reminds me of you when you were just a small child hija……….”

Jose Luis chimed in, “Yeah, we all thought he must have reminded her of you too Inspector. Inspector Miranda was so devastated that we didn’t think she would even keep the baby. I mean have you seen Mar? She could be you Silvia; she could be your child….”

“Huh………..who? He who? What……what reminded Pepa of me?” Silvia initially looked perplexed at Jose Luis as his eyes grew wide in realisation of his declaration.

Curtis was leaning on Don Lorenzo’s desk, taking a swig of his mid morning coffee. Without thinking he blurted out further, “the man, the ‘fling’ man that Pepa had sex with and got herself pregnant…………..” Paco ran over as slapped Curtis on the back causing him to splutter and spill his coffee all over Don Lorenzo’s paperwork.

Don Lorenzo stood up and shot daggers at Curtis, “What the fuck are you doing you imbecile. Get your cohones off my fucking desk and clean up this fucking mess you made! Now! You hear me boy...Now!!!” Curtis was up in a flash and did exactly as he was told as Paco stuttered, searching for the right words to explain to Silvia, “Um, Silvia Curtis meant …err, he meant that…..um er….he didn’t mean…” Paco stroked his forehead with his hand. He had no idea if Pepa had explained to Silvia about his little niece yet and didn’t want any trouble to brew between his sister and her wife.

Silvia looked around at the uncomfortableness that had enveloped the room; none of her colleagues would look her in the eye, none of them except her father. He looked at her questionably, trying to figure out if she did in fact know the truth yet about her daughter.

She shot him a knowing look; she remembered what Pepa had told her about Mar, about how everyone thought she was the result of a one night stand, a fling. She decided to have a bit of fun with her old work colleagues, “What the fuck? Pepa never told me about having sex with a man…..a fling, she lied to me! ” Silvia feigned hurt on her face as she shook her head. Rita went over and put her arm comfortingly around her shoulder.

Paco still attempted to dig them all out of the hole Curtis had seemingly put his sister in, “No Silvia, it wasn’t, er…..um it wasn’t like that…..”

Silvia interrupted her voice angry and harsh, “Paco save it, your sister had a fling and lied to me about it, I am going to kill her…..” she made a bad attempt to storm off and find Pepa.

“Hey Silvia, wait a minute, take it easy it was so hard on Pepa and she thought you were dead, give her a fair go guapa?” Curtis interceded.

Silvia looked at Curtis incredulously, “a fair go? What about me, my wife had a fling that you all are telling me resulted in a baby AND….. she didn’t even tell me the truth about it. What am I supposed to do now……what if this man comes looking for his daughter one day, or if Mar wants to find him….huh? Where does that leave me Curtis?”

Paco was visibly sweating, droplets of water were trickling down his temples and all the hombres didn’t know where too look. Silvia decided it was time to give up the charade.

She continued, a small cheeky grin made its way onto her face, “and here I thought she was telling me the truth……when she said that there wasn’t anyone else, that Mar was some sort of ‘immaculate’ conception?”

“Huh,” was said in unison………..as the hombres all slowly came to the realisation of what Silvia was talking about.

Silvia laughed and they all joined in, the laughter piercing the tension in the room, “its ok, it’s ok; I know how Mar came to be, I can only imagine how hard it must have been for Pepa. I’ll let Pepa tell you all but, Mar she is my daughter too, I am going to love her and bring her up with my wife…………….. she is our daughter!”

Jose Luis was having a bit of trouble keeping up, he scratched his head and voiced his thoughts, “Huh, I still don’t understand? What do you mean Inspector? What does Inspector Miranda have to tell us?

Before anyone could do or say anything to him Don Lorenzo interjected, he thought his daughter had had enough of all the questions, “Get your cohones back to work you idiots…..damn idiots, what do I pay you all for?”

____________________________________________

Pepa finished her debriefing and sauntered out of the interview room; she made her way out to the precinct floor and looked around; it was eerily quiet, where was everyone?

She heard yelling in the distance and concluded it was coming from Don Lorenzo’s office. As she walked up the stairs she over heard the animated conversation, she heard the jovial laughter of her wife and the harsh firm voice of her father in law and she couldn’t help but smile; she walked in just as Don Lorenzo was finishing his tirade.

Povedilla, Mariano, Rita and Paco were scurrying away, making a bee line for the door and Curtis was finishing cleaning up the mess he had made when Pepa interjected signalling for them to all stop and listen to her. They all stopped at the door and turned around, first looking for approval from Don Lorenzo. Once they got it with a simple nod of the head they were eager to hear what Pepa had to say.

“Its ok papa, she’s right, my wife is always right,” Pepa stopped next to Silvia and put her arm around her waist, giving her an exaggerated kiss on the cheek.

Silvia smiled and leaned into her ear, whispering playfully, “You realise what you just said Pepa? You know I am going to remember that for ….. ever!” Pepa just looked into Silvia’s mesmerising orbs and smiled from ear to ear.

“Mar Anna Castro Miranda….is our daughter,” Pepa announced blunt and non assuming, as she continued to gaze at her redhead, “you all just assumed it was a fling, that is what the old Pepa Miranda would have done and I played along, when you asked I did not correct you that is all,” she looked adoringly at Silvia, “Mar is Silvia’s daughter too. They are and will always be my family!”

Pepa changed the subject, “Oh, Princesa the Sub Inspector is waiting for you now. You had better go and see him; he is already upset that we were late this morning. And then we can get out of here….si papa? Is that ok with you?” Pepa looked at her father in law with a hopeful smile.

Don Lorenzo agreed immediately, “Of course….that is fine Pepa. You two take all the time you need!”  Pepa continued to talk to the hombres as Silvia went to the interview room.

_______________________________________________________

As Silvia walked through the door into the interview room Sub Inspector Fernando came barrelling out, almost knocking her to the ground, “Hola! If you could just hang on one minute Ms Castro, I need to go and find some additional paperwork, go inside and take a seat, I will be there momentarily!” Silvia simply nodded and he scooted off down the hall.

She walked into the interview room and sat down in anticipation of the Sub Inspector’s return. The room was silent, peaceful; Silvia sighed as she relaxed back into the chair and began to get lost in the stillness, in her own thoughts.

Suddenly the door flew open, the audible bang causing the whole room to vibrate. Silvia looked up, expecting the sub inspector, “that was qui…….” she stopped mid sentence when she saw who was standing at the doorway, staring vehemently back at her…. ‘joder, what now!’ Silvia thought, she was apprehensive, not sure to be scared, or surprised or what.

Marta Cortez stood at the door, her eyes full of jealousy and anger…….and heart break; Silvia could see the immense sadness in her eyes, but she could see the unimaginable anger too.

Marta immediately noticed that Silvia was wearing Pepa’s clothes, the jeans she had admired Pepa’s amazing ass and gorgeous long legs in on numerous occasions, the same jeans she had ripped off Pepa in the heat of passion many times before and the tank top that……………. she lost her train of thought when she noticed the ring adorning Silvia’s finger, the fucking ring that Pepa wore around her neck, the ring that she never fucking took off; her expression hardened even more and even though she did her best to hide it, the tears began to well in her eyes.

Marta shook her head and tried to regain her composure. She slammed the door shut and locked it behind her, “Silvia Castro, you and me, we need to have a l-i-t-t-l-e chat…. ” she spat out as she walked towards Silvia.
