what will you do when your suntan fades?

this is a long-overdue update about pretty much most of my summer, especially lollapalooza, which was awesome, though it seems like ages ago already. so, click if you're bored and/or like hearing about music (and my life?)...

lollapalooza
flew out to chicago on the night of aug 3rd, stayed with emily and jess near the university of chicago and went to grant park for the concert 4th - 6th

bands i saw a large portion or all of: cursive, iron & wine, mates of state, death cab, nada surf, the go! team, the smoking popes, kanye!!!, the hold steady, andrew bird, the shins, of montreal, wilco, broken social scene
bands i saw some of: eels, stars, ryan adams, my morning jacket, sleater-kinney, built to spill, sonic youth, gnarls barkley (does that make me CRAAAAAAAZYYYYY? probably...), the flaming lips, the new amsterdams, hot chip
bands i overheard a great deal of (sometimes intentionally, sometimes not): common, the new pornographers, red hot chili peppers (we didn't stay, but i could hear them all the way from the train station)

many of the performances were awesome (some unexpectedly so), a few suffered from substandard sound quality on one of the stages (wilco, especially). the crowd was great, there was NO crowd surfing (woo!) emily and i went up front for the smoking popes (and i met them later). most of the time we stayed in the middle or back where we could hear well and see okay - although most of my videos look like they're from much farther back than they actually are. all in all it was a great experience, though i was totally exhausted by the end and found myself sitting down as much as i possibly could.

so, here are a few of the pictures and videos i took (a lot of them are still on jess' hard drive because i was trying to make room for new ones):

FRIDAY:

some cursive to kick things off (sounded much better in person, his voice is kind of weird on this):

so, they had a cellist with them, but i guess she's just touring with them (and is not the original cellist), since they're supposedly moving away from that direction? they also had a whole horn section...interesting.

iron & wine

death cab: after everybody started leaving (before the encore!) emily & i snuck up to the front in anticipation of this one...

video isn't so great, but the sound is pretty decent. i don't know why youtube cut off the last second of it.

saturday:

the popes

the go! team

the flaming lips

KANYE - obviously we were pretty far back, but we didn't do so bad considering there were 50 thousand people in the crowd. but it was so much fun!

jesus walks

sunday - took it easy on the pics

the shins (they might've been on sat, i'm too lazy to check)

wandering monday

ummm... what else?

came up to GLP last weekend w/max and we played at the mystic arts festival and made more than fifty bucks...not bad for an impromptu performance, and it was a lot of fun

the rest of my summer has been mostly devoted to working with some fun kids i became fairly close with (i'm talking about co-counselors, not my little brats). i have lots of pics but i'm not going to post them all here

last day

i look funny

scandalous

anyway, glad that's done with. i think i had more things to report on but i can't remember any right now. hope your summers are going well! i can't wait to get back to school... actually, right now i just can't wait to get home, i'm in GLP and i have nothing to do here, i wish i could start packing.
