I was laid-off from my job at the end of March, along with 75% of the staff, and must now make significant choices as to the direction of my life over the next two decades. The good news about the layoff was that I received a respectable severance package and thanks to the WARN act we all received two months notice that the axe was coming. Since the end of January, all of my “free time” has been devoted to searching for a new job and my efforts I finally being rewarded.
Today I received my first official offer of employment, which is great, but I have many opportunities from which to chose (in theory, at least).
This makes me one of the lucky ones, I know, and I am grateful.
So, for your perusal I submit my list of possible jobs:
1. San Antonio, TX. I like the company, it has potential. The biggest draw is the location - my dad lives east of Dallas and this provides the occasional grandparent experience to my kids, which is important. Plus San Antonio is warm and dry… I could bike to work year-round so long as we live in the city, and we have many housing options open to us.
2. Cambridge, MA. Two biotechs in Cambridge; one small, one medium size. Both have great potential, I could bike to work so long as we stay in the Cambridge metro, but also condemns us to perpetual renting as I _never_ anticipate making enough to buy a house in the area…
3. Suburban Boston. Giant biotech, which is also cool for its own reasons. We could buy a house in the burbs, or keep renting in the Cambridge metro and do the reverse commute.
4. Atlanta, GA. Medium biotech doing some very cool things with tissue regeneration. Located in Kennesaw, GA which is about 15 miles NW of Atlanta. It is warm, and we could afford a house, and the culture is more agreeable.
5. Swiftwater, PA. About two hours north of Philly and two hours from NYC. Large biotech, which is cool. Smack dab in the Pocono’s.
