One of the homework assignments I recently gave my students was for them to write a paragraph responding to whether or not they thought we treat immigrants better now than we did in the 1850s. I got a few really scary and naive responses. Here's one:
"I do think we think we treat immigrants much better now. If an immigrant comes over from a nother country they get $10000. They also dont have to pay taxes for 7 years. They can take these both and get a business tax free for 7 years. I think immigrants get it better than Americans. When a couple (both U.S. citizens) have a child, they dont get $10,000 for the child or for its college. I think its unfair how well we treat them."
