edit: i wrote this on a whim so any information could be wrong. mainly it's just a lot of opinions.
i'm slow on learning news, but it has just come to my attention that a radio station back home has fired it's djs. now, i haven't listened to 94.5 the buzz all too much lately because it just plays a lot of crap. you can't really blame it too bad though since evil clear channel has a tight leash on it. but apparently ratings were really bad so off with the djs' heads. i find it amusing though. i don't think it's the djs so much as perhaps it could be the music. but i guess i find it a little upsetting because when i did listen to the radio station a lot, i liked the djs a lot. they were pretty cool people, and they did a lot of community work as well. and now they're gone and will be replaced by people who probably won't even live up to their predecessors.
i'm not sure who's to blame for the firing, but i'm pretty sure clear channel has a large hand in it. now see, clear channel is just evil in general. we all know this. my music prof has mentioned that you only think radio is actually done by the djs but in all reality, you hear the same thing at the same time all over the country. it's all an act to make it look like the djs are picking the songs and the listeners are requesting the songs. that's always been an underlying suscpicion of mine.
the truth of the matter is that there isn't really a decent station in houston. everything is pretty much owned by clear channel. i'd like to see something that plays rock music but has the djs and listeners pick the music. this way you get to hear some of the great older stuff on top of the good newer stuff. and you don't have to be subjected to horrible bands as much either. being on a major record label doens't make you bad, but it's common knowledge that the music industry pushes bands that it can get the most money for, whether they sound good or not. i think we can all think of a few bands and/or artists that fit into that category.
now, i'd like to see radio play more indie rock. there are a lot of radio stations that play indie rock on top of the same artists you'll find on the buzz. and i think that's how radio should be. you get a little bit of everything in one genre. it's not dictated by some large national corporation that won't give smaller artists a chance. i wish houston had a station like that. if they do, i don't know about it. someone please inform me if houston has a station like this.
i don't know. i just don't think that firing djs is going to make the station better. the only way clear channel can make the station better is by adding more variety to the playlists. stop playing the same songs every hour. play us a lot of the old goodies. play us some of the new goodies. but don't overplay anything because that's when radio is annoying. when everytime you turn it on you hear the same song again and again. you can't get that much music out to the poeple that way. to get the most music out to the most people you have to play a large variety. at least, that's my theory. but hey, what do i know?
