Actually... the script was just stupid really, though like you I felt it held my attention - unlike last weeks borefest. And the direction was nice, wasnt it?
I loved the Merlin saves Arthur scene - all of it, including the light hearted bit afterwards, I loved the look of he programme, I loved Merlins role this week, Colin was amazing I thought, Gwen/Angel was convincingly evil and much more interesting than Mary Sue - and I found the the fact they had Gwen spouting exactly the same mind-numbing platitudes to neutralise Arthur as she usually does to supposedly help him, really really funny! I'll sort of miss Evil Gwen when she gets unenchanted in 4.09 and returned to sanctity and stunning dullness. And of course there will be no consequences for anything she's done because she is the only character who doesn't ever make mistakes (without a get out of jail free card sewn in) therefore never has to pay a price.
Ooh - by the way - you thought MA was back on point this week? Reluctantly...I kind of felt it wasnt somehow? The scenes were fine and Colin was back to his old twinkly Merliny self but I felt Arthur was kind of... fond but distant? I was speculating that perhaps Bradley is going for 'older and wearier' but he wasn't in 5.01 and 5.02, so I just dont know. Maybe he hated what was being done to his character :P The chemistry between Arthur and Gwen of course was as forced, cloying and unbelievable as it always is when the writers try to push it into something its not. As usual too for all the usual endless flowery declarations. the understatedness and genuine emotion of the Merlin/Arthur stuff knocked it off he map, but I still felt the Merthur wasnt as punchy as usual? Tell me I imagined it B? Hmmm? :P
