Hello! It's that time of the week again. My Merlin review, for episode six. You'll have to make your way through the Spoilers of Injustice and the Words of Weeping Fandom to...oh crap it, just click on the cut below...
Yeah, T, we can put this one in the 'Agree' column I think ;) (I'll reply to your review tomorrow after work, I'm so behind this week! It's been hectic!)
I have no earthly idea how Gwen got from bawling her eyes out amonst the ectoplasm twigs to being 'best buds' with Morgana and sewing 'I hate Arthur' onto her nightie about 5 minutes later. I'm holding judegement until after the next episode. There's probably only a 1% chance that they'll explain it and turn the twist into a fantastic story, but I'll give them the benefit of doubt until I know. I will be so pissed off if it's just a spell though and she goes back to dullard Gwen afterwards. What would be the point of that? Really? Although the idea of Gwen being manipulated and convinced by Morgana would mean that the story is a bit shoddy and fast, at least it would have actual repercussions. I could forgive the haste. I'd let it go. Just please not Enchanted Gwen again. It's just a mash up of two episodes from last season.
I'm not too keen on the 'my lord' and 'sire' repeat and rinse they're on this season either. It's been in about three episodes where it just seems out of whack. That being said I again could forgive it, if the rest of the interaction was good. It wasn't here. It's like you said, it was ticked off, rushed though, but never stopped to become more than bare bones. It just felt like it was in black and white, but should have been in colour. I do think they've kept in the little equality continuity in there, which I'm greatful for, but otherwise the Arthur, Merlin and Knights scenes were a wash out for me.
I wasn't keen in the Arthur characterisation in this one. He was representitive of what was wrong with the weaknesses of the episode. Everything just felt rushed and surface level. He was a husband searching for his missing wife, but we never got any deeper than him throwing a tantram with his sword. This wasn't a good Arthur episode for me.
