I'm going to discuss a little bit about Supernatural up to what they've aired of season seven in the US and a little casting spoiler for late season 7, so don't read on if you don't want to know.
I'm also discussing my life a little bit, so if you're waiting for my autobiography and the inevitable Made-For-TV-Movie that follows, please look away now!
So about a month ago, maybe more, I wrote about how I'd gotten into Supernatural (better late than never) and asked if I should carry on with it. I got a positive response, so I ploughed ahead. I've now caught up. I was really quick. I've had a temp job ever since I moved towns, which was supposed to see me through into next year. Unfortunately, things being what they are, they had to let me go, which really, really sucks, but I've had worse things happen this year, so I'm just gonna try and stay upbeat. So I've had aching amounts of time on my hands, so one of the things I've been doing is marathoning Supernatural (I've also been baking mounds of cupcakes. Even my nephews are sick of them now).
I watched the first six seasons of Supernatural on DVD. I don't know when they air Season 7 in the UK, but I don't have the channel it's on so it doesn't really matter. I hate watching things on my computer over the internet, i much prefer my nice tv, so I was going to wait till the DVD came out (probably next summer/autumn) for it. However, I then completely by accident stumbled across the following headline;
'Misha Collins Confirms Supernatural Return'
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/ustv/s6/supernatural/news/a355124/misha-collins-confirms-supernatural-return.html Wait...WHAT?!!! What do they mean 'returns'? Where the hell did he go? For how they left it at the end of Season Six, I thought they were going to have a bit of an ongoing sub-plot with Castiel struggling with his heavenly 'promotion'. So I had to watch the start of season 7. It was strange. The first episode had this major theme of Castiel, heaved down with power by all these souls he's consumed, trying to fill God's shoes and ultimately having to power through it and thinking he's sacrificing himself. Then you have the twist of actually, the Leviathon have overtaken him. That's where you think 'Oh, okay, they're going to have 'Castiel' as a sort of villian of the season, as a vessel for the Leviathon'. Especially as Misha Collins seemed to be freakin good at being manically evil (He kind of reminds me of John Simm in terms of acting extremes). Then they dragged poor old Cas into a lake.
They seemed to then turn the series more back into a series 1 style, with the brother roadtripping, monster of the week style. Like TPTB suddenly decided to go with a different 'theme' of the season. That's absolutly fine and I think the brothers hunting as a team should be the heart of the show. Just don't fucking take away my little angel!
Because I watched the whole six seasons in pretty much one go, I don't know if this gives me a different view than anyone else, and I don't know the fandom at all, so I have no idea how much Castiel/Misha Collins is liked within the fandom. Although he's been in it more than any other supporting character (except Bobby) so I assume he's not universally hated. I just really gripped on to him as a character ever since I saw him (although to be fair that was only a matter of about 3 weeks ago!). He made one hell of an entrance. Also one of my favourite films ever is Wings of Desire, and I don't know if it was intentional, a coincidence, or me reading too much in to it, but the character screamed like a shout out to that film for me. The other angels/heaven etc, didn't really, so it probably was just my little brain making the comparison.
But I suppose it's all moot anyway, because he's coming back, YAY!!! (At least for a little while). I do wonder what he's coming back as though. I'm really glad I found out he was coming back before I watched season 7, otherwise I would have been well miffed! That would have been another one of my shows that killed one of my favourite characters by chucking them in a lake! Although I suppose on Supernatural, no one is really ever dead yadda, yadda, yadda, but that not a comfort! Especially as this season, the Impala seems to be missing and now Bobby appears dead! (*sniff*) Cas, Impala and Bobby in ten episodes? That's harsh, man.
I Love, Love, LOVE the brothers and I think some of the supporting characters they have come and go to play hunters/demons/angels do an amazing job, and I always enjoy the episodes anyway...I just want my angel back :(
