Folding@home - It's a personal networking project along the lines of Seti@home and the Prime Numbers (Dimes). The idea is that by utilizing a bunch of computers they can harness the power to do the work of one supercomputer. While SETI searches areas of space for discernable noises that would indicate signs of intelligent life and DIMES looks for the largest prime numbers and related, Folding focuses on running simulations of folding proteins to better understand how they work in real life. This would be helpful in understanding how cancers form, ALS, etc. A biologist at Stanford, Vijay Pande, is in charge of this. Initial results were promising but lately it's been mixed. Some groups, persons have stopped contributing on the project as a result. I'd say that if you do the project and complete 10 work units you'd be higher than half of those ranked ( ... )
