Just a few thoughts on the television shows I've been watching the last week, in roughly chronological order.
Heroes The first two episodes of this were mostly great, and the 4 since have been widely varied. I dislike both the cheerleader character (I mean, how many ways can we watch her die?) and the schizophrenia character (since when is that a superpower?), and a recent interview I found when looking up when the next episode would air fills me with the same sense of disillusionment I felt after half a season of Lost. The jist of the writers/creators' interviewed was "the goal is for this to never end, for there always to be something. And we reveal the powers when the ratings are down." ...I am now very skeptical, but I still think the first two episodes are simply worth watching for fun.
South Park Yeah, still watching it. Half-terrible, never funny, but makes 2 or 3 decent points which makes it worth watching if I've got the time (and currently I do...).
The Office Only recently watched it, marathoned through the 2 seasons in about a week. Great show in the absence of Arrested, but hate the whole Pam and Jim nonsense. Is this Friends or what? On the one hand, I am affected by their emotional manipulations, but simultaneously am pissed off at it. Steve Carell has no logistical right to still work in the office, aside from the fact that his character is consistently hilarious. Worth checking out if you have not, dailymotion.com has them all.
Battlestar Galactica What can I say without spoilers? Not much, just that I'm happy. Much happier than at the season opening. An intersting plot with sense of direction, rather than Lynch-esque pretentious bluffing.
Discovery Atlas Checked it out after Penny Arcade's praise. The premise: 30 countries profiled in 2 hour episodes. D/led China and Italy, neither have finished, but China was on tv tonight. Amazing in concept, disappointing in reality. I was wondering how they could possibly cover "China" in 2 hours, but understood the natural limits. Was excited anyway. Things got off well with a description of rice farming...but eventually spent half an hour on the dramatics of a single girl trying to get into the Olympics in gymnastics. Was terrible, why do we need this drama? Would not recommend, although parts were beautiful. Just not enough information to justify the time spent.
Yeah, it's a bit of television, but Heroes, The Office, and Battlestar are the three I'll be sticking with in the end (and I'm not convinced on Heroes). I guess Family Guy is coming back again tomorrow, so one more there.
Have been sick all week. Every time I think I'm getting better, my cough gets worse. At least my voice is back...
