Haven't been able to get online since.. Saturday? Felt so weird, not being able to check my email, knowing that I'd be swamped! Thank God for the 100MB Yahoo gives. *grin* Finally managed to set up a connection with my 56k modem, so I'm now online, using my mac! Surfing speed isn't quite as slow as I expected, though I suppose it's cos I haven't tried downloading anything. Heh.
My last day at the lab was a bittersweet one. The company was great, the food was fab, and Dr L was really nice to cough up our share - $254 worth of baked rice/pastas, mudpies, milkshakes and cheesecakes. Mmmm. And they got me a
thumbdrive after all! Isn't it lovely? Kane spray painted the cap purple, and I'm gonna think of other ways to make this uniquely mine. Haha. And I was well and truly fooled! When we came back from lunch and I saw a paperbag on my table, Elicia asked me what was inside. So I opened it, and found the cutest bear, simply begging to be hugged. And I was like, awww, thanks, you guys! And she said it wasn't from them, that they hadn't thought of getting me anything, they thought they'd write sweet things in a card and treat me to lunch. I was rather hurt by that comment. I mean, they certainly don't have to get me something expensive. But not to give me a small token? Surely I meant more to them than that? (Besides, all that talk about paying for lunch was rubbish, we all knew Dr L would pay q:). Yeah. So after a while, after noticing my forlorn face, they felt bad and thought they'd carried their joke too far. That was when Shin leaned over and exclaimed (I was reading a sad fan-fic on my laptop at that time, while waiting for Dr L to finish using the Apple, so I could scan my last set of plates), "Wah! What's that bright thing shining over there!" So I looked. Lo and behold, there was a silver thumbdrive plugged into the USB port of my laptop, its blue light winking away. I was stunned! Didn't catch on till some more people magically appeared around my table and ooh-ed and ahhh-ed, asking me where I got it from, etc. Some of them were even more direct, they were like, "Wow! The silver matches your laptop, and the light really stands out! So pretty!". Haha. I was so touched. (:
What a lovely surprise! Just what I needed for school, too. (: No problems using it with my mac/ a normal PC, so it's all good. And the bear was from Mdm Chew. I was even more touched that she got me something, we hardly know each other and we seldom talk, but she and her husband are just so sweet. *yay!* And Dr L wrote me such a glowing reference letter! Awww! It's just so nice to know that the 10+ months I spent here wasn't a waste of time, it's so good to know that people will miss me and that I did make a positive impact in their lives. I know it sounds corny, but I hope you know what I mean..
So yes, my last day was spent taking lots of photos, rushing to score and tabulate my last set of titration results, and scanning / labelling the plates, and packing my stuff. I actually left the lab near 7pm, with a bulging bag slung over my shoulder, and two big carrier bags in my hands. Haha. Was tearing in the bus, as I read all the things they wrote. *sniffles at the recollection*
I'll really miss them all.. I know we'll keep in (not-so-constant) contact, but well, things will be different from now on. Their life will go on collectively as a whole, while a new chapter of my life will begin. Oh wells. I'm just really glad my first forage into the working world was such a great one. (:
Alright gotta go now! Meeting Sam for a late lunch, and a spot of shopping. Toodles!~
