Derek Stepan and Ryan McDonagh primer
My motives behind this are entirely selfish, I won't even try and deny it.
Derek Stepan and Ryan McDonagh: College BFFs
Derek Stepan:
→ Born June 18, 1990 in Hastings, MN. Drafted in the second round of the 2008 NHL Entry draft by the New York Rangers. Currently plays for the New York Rangers as a centre.
→ In 2010 at the IIHF World Junior Championships he was Captain of Team USA. Team USA would go on to win the gold medal by beating Canada in overtime.
→ Nickname: Steps
Ryan McDonagh:
→ Born June 13, 1989 in St. Paul, MN. Drafted in the first round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens. His rights would be traded (along with Christopher Higgins, Pavel Valentenko, and Doug Janik) in 2009 to the New York Rangers, in exchange for Scott Gomez, Tom Pyatt, and Michael Busto. He is currently a defenseman for the New York Rangers.
→ Won a silver medal with Team USA in 2007 at IIHF World Juniors. Also represented Team USA in 2009 at the World Juniors.
→ Nickname: Mactruck

Oh man, where to start?
Okay, so, back in high school, Derek played for Hastings and then Shattuck-Saint Mary's. At the time, Ryan was playing at Cretin-Derham Hall. According to both of them, they saw each other twice a year then when their high schools played against each other. When Stepan went to Shattuck, there was an elite league they both played on, so they saw each other more regularly then.
Anyway, Derek and Ryan would eventually end up at the University of Wisconsin, where they played hockey together. ON THE SAME TEAM THIS TIME. Pardon me while I just weep over the sorry lack of college roommate experimentation fic. DAMMIT, Hockey fandom, WHY DO YOU HATE ME?!?
Ahem.
Derek would eventually make the jump from Wisconsin to the New York Rangers roster where on his first game in the NHL, he would score a hat trick against the Buffalo Sabres (Oct 9, 2010).
*cue Tom Cochrane's Big League*
Okay, okay, okay, I couldn't resist. Moving on ...
So, Ryan ... he signed an entry level contract with the Rangers on July 6, 2010. He cracked the Rangers lineup on January 3, 2011 after starting the 2010-2011 season on the Hartford Wolfpack. His first game was on January 7, 2011 against the Dallas Stars.
And, yeah, THEY'RE ROOMMATES. YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS SHIT UP, OKAY? I'm serious. They have even said so themselves (more on that later).
So, uh ... moving on ...

"I got pulled off the ice," said Stepan, the Rangers' second-round pick (51st overall) in 2008, "and the trainer came up to me and said, 'Hey, I heard your teammate got traded.' I looked at my phone and had a couple of text messages saying, 'I'm excited we'll be together again, hopefully.'"
I believe the following was said during the Rangers pre-season tour in Europe (somebody correct me if I'm wrong):
“Me and Derek (Stepan) are both roommates on the road and have had a good 2 days of practice trying to prepare for team Austria tomorrow. We’re both really excited to get the games under way here in Slovakia. You can watch us live on Versus early in the morning at 10:15 am.”
