Summary: About leaving, and not looking back.
She's sitting in her car, looking out towards the worn park bench, and seemingly endless dirt road, She has been sitting here since three. It's five now, and the sun is just beginning to set. She has said her goodbyes to everyone she knows. She has pressed her face against the warmth of her dog's muzzle, feeling the tears slip down her cheeks. She's ready to trade the calm and quiet of the countryside for bright green martinis and sky-reaching concrete buildings. New York City calls to her like a moth to a flame.
Her face is scrubbed raw, her cheeks a healthy, rosy colour. Her lips are bare, the bottom one - which was always full - looks puffier than usual. She wonders if it's because she has been biting it.
She makes a mental note to put on lipstick when she gets to a gas station closer to the city. Kind of like a new kiss to a new life.
She said goodbye to Aidan last night. Leaving the comfort, and warmth of his worn sheets. She wonders if the sheets will still smell like her when he wakes in a few hours. He will reach his hand out, his fingertips hoping to graze the smooth skin of her back, but she knows he will come up empty-handed this time.
She leans her head on the steering wheel, closes her eyes, and waits for the tears to subside. It would be so easy to turn around, go back to her quiet, and comfortable existence.
She grits her teeth, turns the key in the ignition, and throws her car into reverse. The hum of the engine echoes in the silence. She takes one last look out her windshield to the park bench and worn dirt road, before she takes her foot off the brake.
She never looks back.
