You would not believe how annoying that one line was because of HP. In order to try and avoid it, I actually had a different line ("will my death hurt"), but had to toss it because really, who speaks like that? It also had to be a question instead of a statement in order to continue the father/son dynamic. Sam needs the Devil to comfort him and the Devil does. I also needed the reader to realize that Sam had been talking of his potential suicide at the beginning of the epilogue.
I'm happy you liked the waitress. It might be important *hint hint*. Her arrival is really where the story kicks off, but I had to get Sam/Andi out of the way first.
I just really think it's cool that the A) the Devil plots so deeply (and possibly even deeper *hint hint*; and B) he actually gives Sam gifts he wants, albeit in a really strange and twisted way. The Devil didn't have to make his leaving easier on his friends and family, but he knew Sam would want that, so he gave it to him. I'm sure Sam would prefer a puppy, but this is the Devil, so he gets what the Devil considers really truly deep gifts - as opposed to the many superficial temptations (with strings attached) he usually gives out instead.
