Hey, thanks for commenting!

As to both examples, Reid was already familiar with them. He was playing the StarTrek game with Anderson and Gina, two characters that while aren't seen onscreen a lot, *are* people Reid works with everyday. So, comfort! I also think Reid's over-exuberant "drink!" was pretty out there too, so not necessarily a *normal* conversation. Lastly - just because I'm a logic nut when it comes to timelines - "Big Game" was mid-Season 2, so right about when MGG gave his interview about Reid's "autistic tendencies" interview to About.com.

Also, the chess kid was also established as someone Reid already knew, so yeah...though I do like your idea about maybe because he was a kid helped. Reid's very gentle with...well, the best I can think of to describe it is people who are below him maturation-wise, like kids or mentally handicapped. Something like that. In addition, they did share a similar interest - chess - so that could have helped. "Memoriam" had Diana pointing out Reid played a lot of outdoor chess with strangers as a child. It also didn't really seem like they actually *talk* all that much, given they're so into their games.

I'd really like to see Reid at a Ball-like (or conference) function, trying to strike up a conversation. I imagine it would go a lot like the "Dr. Who" conversation from one of the last episodes!
