Elves...

Elves are, to me, like overly-sweet candy. I liked them when I was younger, but they're over-done and I tend to think of them as the Mary-Sue race of all things fantasy.

So here's the question: What's cool about elves?

Feel free to draw from multiple and/or contradictory sources.

I'm looking less for a reference to a specific story or series, and more to concepts, ideas or images that you like about elves.

EXAMPLE:    'I think elves are cool because some of them are really old' (Thinking of LoTR)
                       'I think elves are cool because they wear furry vests' (Thinking of Elfquest)
