Jack/ Ianto Fanmix (SPOILERS FOR CoE)
My fanmix for the Evil Genius Mix over at sci-fi land!
Ok, so background. I started thinking about this fanmix as soon as I saw the challenge up at sci-fi land. It sounds pretty lame, but it's a bit of a brain child of mine. I've stressed out over what songs to put on this, and I have spent hours trying to create a flow with it. Also, forgive me if this is cheesy. XD
The theme is basically a view of Jack and Ianto's relationship through song. The ups and downs, Jack leaving, Ianto dying... I tried to represent that with different songs.
01// Boulevard of Broken Dreams
All of the lyrics to this song represent Jack before Ianto, I think. For so long he's been alone, not letting himself truly love. (I've used the American Idiot broadway cast version, just because I like the sound better.
My shadow's the only one that walks beside me/ My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating/ Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me/ 'Til then I walk alone
03// Animal- Neon Trees
I think that as you progress through series one, you start to see that Jack and Ianto are becoming more than just sex buddies. They're becoming closer, though neither would ever admit it. Jack will never acknowledge it because he's afraid to love. Ianto never will because he has Lisa, and he's ashamed to begin to feel something for the man he's just using.
Here we go again/ I kinda wanna be more than friends/ So take it easy on me/ I'm afraid you're never satisfied/ Here we go again/ We're sick like animals/ We play pretend/ You're just a canible/ And I'm afraid I wont get out alive/ No I won't sleep tonight.

Lisa's dead. Jack finds out that Ianto has been lying this entire time. Lisa's death is a huge change in their relationship, and a huge change in Ianto. Ianto has to move on, pick up the pieces of his heart. Eventually, though he's not completely alright, Ianto is starting to feel normal again.
Although a tear may be ever so near / That's the time you must keep on trying / Smile, what's the use of crying. / You'll find that life is still worthwhile- / If you just smile.
05// My Same- ADELE
I threw this one in kinda for fun, which Ianto and Jack are most of the time. Their banter is brilliant, and they seem so comfortable with each other. Plus, the lyrics just seem to fit their distinctive personalities so well. The entire song is just so fitting for them.

06// I Miss You- Blink-182
Again, pretty loose interpretation. I can't imagine that after all he's been through Ianto would just move on after Jack leaves.

07// Set Fire to the 3rd bar- Snow Patrol
Ok, this song. Guh. So beautiful. Jack's point of view when he's gone and being held by The Master. (Admittedly, I've never seen the episodes, but my sister has explained it all to me.) No matter how nonchalant he was when he got back, Jack was in so much pain.

08// Goodbye- Ke$ha
On a Jack/ Ianto mix, seeing Ke$ha must make you go 'Whuuuu?'. This is pre-commercialized Ke$ha, and it sounds amazing. Ianto has lost faith that Jack is coming back. He's moving on, he's becoming more of an important member on the team, and he's bottling up the anger and pain he felt when Jack left.
The smile fate was wearing, slowly die/ Minutes turn to months/ Silence of the phone just mocks my cry/ When I see that you've moved on/ Secret's out that I did care about you/ You broke me, you left me/ There was nothing I could do/ I'll find a way to close the door
09// Trouble- Coldplay
Jack's back, and he can see that under Ianto's facade of calmness that he really did hurt him by leaving without even saying goodbye.

Jack and Ianto are closer now after he left, and they're living in the moment because there's no way to know if they'll have another together.

11// Look After You- The Fray
Jack, not being able to die, just wants to protect Ianto. He wants to keep him safe and not allow any harm to come to him. Jack doesn't know how he could cope without Ianto now, and that scare him.
There now, steady love, so few come and don't go/ Will you won't you, be the one I'll always know/ When I'm losing my control, the city spins around/ You're the only one who knows, you slow it down
12// Speed of Sound- Pearl Jam
Reading the lyrics to this, I just knew it was the perfect song to wrap up Ianto's death. It's so beautiful, and it just... Fits. Jack's lost Ianto, something he already knew would happen, but it's a reality now. I think this must be how he feels after he woke up, and knew Ianto wouldn't.
And yet I’m still holding tight/ To this dream of distant light/ In that somehow ill survive/ But this night has been a long one/ Waiting on a word that never comes/ The whisper in the dark/ Is that you or just my thoughts/ I’m wide awake and reaching out
