Assuming I counted correctly, a few fannish stats for 2014.
Recs posted to DW/LJ in 2014: 492 500
Yes, this is why I posted those final 8 on December 31st. :P It would be nice to increase that number in 2015, but what would be even better would be to spread them out more regularly rather than intermittently posting several large recs posts in a row. Two other recs related goals include posting recs for more types of fanworks and more instances of longer recs. The
rec of the Steve/Bucky fic Revenant by
stele3 would be one of the only examples of the latter from 2014 that made it to posting. They're not all going to be long recs, of course, but I'd really like to spend more words on some of them.
I did like doing the Thanksgiving
Holiday Fannish Playlist, but next year will involve more planning ahead! Being out of town with about half a bar of service on a good day makes doing the recs in the moment more than a little difficult.
Fannish Bookmarks Added to
My Pinboard: 2,130
Well, that's a number. I do want to clean things up a bit and it only involves wading through 11,415 bookmarks, so how hard can it be? No, seriously, that's a warehouse I need to tidy up. I know there are random bits missing appropriate tags at the very least. I also need to update the tags on everything recced in November/December as I couldn't do when I was actually posting the Holiday Fannish Playlist.
If I have any goals here it would be to bookmark more artwork. Even with limited time on Tumblr, I see a lot of gorgeous work but don't keep track of it. This means it doesn't get recced. So if I'm bookmarking more, then I can rec more, and this aids in achieving the goal of reccing more types of fanworks. Some of the other stuff I need to actively seek out, but the artwork I'm already seeing, I just need to keep track of it. (The issue of changing Tumblr user names, especially the ones without forwards, I won't go into because I end up incoherent with frustration rather quickly.)
Fannish trajectory: Away from the all consuming drama of Teen Wolf and neck deep into a Bucky Barnes Problem.
I'm pretty happy about this switch over. Anything involving the Winter Soldier is going to have some angst and tragedy, but Teen Wolf is stressful on a regular, ongoing basis because of emerging canon. I don't trust Jeff Davis with my sanity and I was glad to wrest control back from that particular rabbit hole. I enjoy reading it! I just don't want it dominating my every fannish moment. Distance from that is good.
Then there's the ongoing Bucky Barnes Problem. Maybe I just appreciate the more jaded approach right now, but the characters involved feel worn down in a way that hits a common note for me even when the actual experiences are entirely different. I find myself identifying with fandom's Bucky in ways I wouldn't have expected and loving him for everything else, too, which doesn't even touch on Steve, Nat, Sam, Clint, Tony, Pepper, Kate, or any of the others. The MCU and Hawkguy are just awesome playgrounds right now.
I can't say that I'm looking forward to some of Marvel's upcoming developments - definitely not Ant-Man and I'm nervous about Avengers 3 and CA:Civil War - but I am anticipating learning more about Carol Danvers and T'Challa, so that's something.
Fandoms picked up this year: Arrow, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, Maleficent, Kings, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ann Leckie's Imperial Radch, The Hobbit, and OMG Check Please!
The
OMG Check, Please! fannish primer was a highlight! It was fun to write and seemed well received. Writing 1-2 fannish primers in 2015 is a goal, albeit a vague one, and partially a reaction to the hole still left by the loss of LJ's fandom intro communities.
The Bilbo/Thorin hit me right upside the head during the third Hobbit installment, and I was looking for fic the next day, so it definitely warrants a mention. I think I only paid vague attention to Legolas/Gimli before that, so I'm giving it a new-fandom-for-me status.
Maleficent was a pretty minor addition as far as my participation goes, and I've really only read marginally more GotG, but the others have been notable delights. Or, in the case of Kings, notably painful. In the sort of way where you keep going back for more, but still - Kings is a canon I am never, ever watching. I've only seen a few Imperial Radch/Ancillary Series fics, but the books were so good for me that it feels like a more significant fannish involvement.
Resolutions Summation: More ongoing goals, really, but goals set this time of year are called "resolutions" and have a built-in check-in 365 days from now.
- Spreading out recs/more frequent rec posts
- More types of fanworks represented in rec posts
- Occasional longer recs - at least one a month seems reasonable, but anything more than one a year is an improvement. Siiiigh.
- Pre-planning a Thanksgiving Fannish Holiday Playlist
- Properly tidying up my Pinboard account
- Bookmarking more fanart
- Creating 1-2 fannish primers
