Recs! Fic & Vids - Star Trek, Arrow, Maleficent, Spider-Man, Avengers/MCU Various

Jun 30, 2014 21:34

I basically stopped adding to this list because it was a wall o' text, then I added 2 more because somehow that only made 18 and at least round it out to 20, right? I mean, there's 2200+ links marked to be recced on Pinboard so...

Admin notes: I will no longer be posting the entirety of rec posts to Tumblr since that, oddly enough, requires different - more complicated - formatting than DW/LJ (which Semagic makes easier to format for) and adds considerably to the time involved. Because that means less recs and that's sad, right? I will however post a rec list announcement and a link back here, along with a link on Twitter. Hopefully that will work well enough for anyone interested. If that's a problem for anyone, please let me know.

.: Star Trek :.

Long Live (Star Trek) by
cosmic_llin
Length: 5:19 minutes
Footage: Star Trek TOS, AOS, DS9, ENT, & TNG
Rating: PG
Relationship(s): Gen
Summary: Long live all the magic we made.
Reccer's Notes: I have a definite love for vids that draw out connections within the source and this one is a good example. It's a story and an homage to how the Trek universe is inter-connected within itself, implying by extension the connections to our past, our present, and our hopes for the future, fannishly and as a society. A lovely, lovely vid that, as several people have said, "Every Trekker should see."

Icarus by
Yunuen
Length: 3:16 minutes
Footage: Star Trek AOS
Rating: PG
Relationship(s): Gen
Summary: Fanvid about Jim Kirk; youngest captain in fleet, full of greatness and not an ounce of humility, and rapidly flying towards an early grave. “Never regret thy fall, O Icarus of the fearless flight, For the greatest tragedy of them all is never to feel the burning light.”
Reccer's Notes: Speaking of Trek! Another highly recced vid. It's fast and gorgeous as the golden son (of George Kirk, yes, but also Pike) burns bright and high and hot.

.: Maleficent :.

Late Birds and Mealy Worms by
cyprith
Length: 711 words
Fandom: Maleficent
Rating: PG
Relationship(s): Maleficent/Diavall
Summary: His mistress' wings are a terrible mess after so many years away. Diaval does his very best not to think about it.
Reccer's Notes: Sweetness <3

(Be)Loved by
mischif
Length: 1.984 words
Fandom: Maleficent
Rating: PG-13
Relationship(s): Maleficent/Diavall
Summary:

Knotgrass had gifted her with ‘Grace and Beauty, and be loved by all who meet her’.

Maleficent had said when placing her curse that ‘The princess shall indeed grow in grace and beauty, beloved by all who meet her."

There’s a difference between ‘be loved ‘ and ‘beloved’.

And there are many different kinds of love.

Reccer's Notes: Insightful Aurora POV with a lovely finish.

.: Spider-Man :.

base, structure, roof by
theapplepielifestyle
Length: 9.052 words
Fandom: The Amazing Spider-Man
Rating: PG-13
Relationship(s): Peter/Gwen/MJ
Summary: As it turns out, MJ discovering Peter Parker is Spiderman isn’t actually the most notable thing that happens to him during senior year.
Reccer's Notes: The part of MJ is being played by Michael B. Jordan (a reference to a comment by Andrew Garfield), so this is a partial genderswap. MJ navigates the waters from being friends with Peter and Gwen to actively being in a relationship with them. I really loved this but, fair warning, my embarrassment squick was uncomfortable over the cabbie's unstated presence during heavy petting. Ymmv. Now with 1,500 word sequel: Boredom and Rouge!

.: Arrow :.

Rule 63 by
jaegermighty
Length: 1.377 words
Fandom: Arrow
Rating: PG
Relationship(s): Oliver/Felicity
Summary: Friday night, there's a dress waiting for Felicity when she gets home, a gorgeous black and green off-shoulder number with some cut-out detailing on the skirt that makes her knees go weak, just a little bit. Felicity puts it on and walks around her apartment in it for fifteen minutes or so before she calls Olivia because, wow. She's had long-term boyfriends she loves less than this dress, and she's only known it for half an hour.
Reccer's Notes: This is fairly short - it's part of Jaeger's Multiverse drabbles collection. As you might guess by the title, Oliver is instead Olivia here, and she has indeed bought Felicity a dress, which comes with a small ulterior motive. I loved Felicity's voice here and I'd really love to read more about Felicity and Olivia! (Yes, that's a hint. If anyone has any Rule 63!Oliver recs, feel free to share.)

.: Avengers :.

Counting Stars (MCU Phase 2) by
such_heights
Length: 4:29 minutes
Footage: Iron Man 3, Thor 2, and Captain America 2
Rating: PG
Relationship(s): Gen-ish (canon, if anything)
Summary: Everything that kills me makes me feel alive.
Reccer's Notes: The comments helped me to understand that I was watching Tony, Thor, and Steve all have their identies torn apart and reconstructed into something newer and stronger, but closer to the core of who they are rather than the layers of public identity that they've assumed as Iron Man, as the good soldier, as the prince. None of them took this journey alone and the vid reflects how many people were right there with them - and a bonus after credits scene for one who notably wasn't. <3

A Mechanical Chaos - The Monster and the Corridor by
barbitone
Fandom: Avengers
Rating: PG-13
Relationship(s): Gen
Artist's Notes: When he thinks, he thinks that he’s been dreaming for so long now.
Reccer's Notes: A comic in 9 still pages/panels. Bucky's mental landscape, before, during, and a bit after CATWS. Heart breaking, hopeful, and amazing.

Factory Paint with a Rebuilt Engine by
jenna_thorn
Length: 490 words
Fandom: Avengers
Rating: PG
Relationship(s): Gen (Tony/Pepper referenced)
Summary: Tony and Clint, sharing space.
Reccer's Notes: In an amusing bit of conversation, Tony and Clint assign themselves and their teammates to various movie roles including Sherlock Holmes and James Bond.

Pancake Sundays by
tenshinokorin
Length: 1.248 words
Fandom: Avengers
Rating: PG
Relationship(s): Gen
Summary: Nothing brings back memories like a familiar meal.
Reccer's Notes: Bucky/Food has a piece of my heart as an OTP.

Strike by
Imbecamiel
Length: 6.648 words
Fandom: Avengers
Rating: PG
Relationship(s): Gen
Summary: Sometimes the road to recovery involves bowling. Conveniently, so does the one to the Grand Canyon.
Reccer's Notes: This is wonderful. :D Sometime nebulous time after Bucky is well on his way to recovery, he, Steve, and Sam are on a road trip to the Grand Canyon. During an unexpected stop over in the middle of nowhere, they end up entertaining themselves by going bowling one evening. Steve and Bucky are 90-something-year-old juvenile delinquents with super soldier reflexes, Sam's the Responsible Adult, and it's all fluff and laughter. <3

Tall Tales by
pascals_wager
Length: 1.385 words
Fandom: Avengers
Rating: PG
Relationship(s): Gen
Summary:

“You’re going to be the next Dr. Seuss,” Stark parrots off the review on the book’s back flap. He sounds horrified. Bucky, who’s peering over his shoulder, bursts into laughter. Stark sends him a dirty look.

“Did you know about this?” he demands of Bucky, his tone accusing.

(Bucky and Steve craft picture books.)

Reccer's Notes: Just ridiculously adorable.

Oasis by
Sholio
Length: 8.595 words
Fandom: Avengers
Rating: PG
Relationship(s): Gen (Pepper/Tony background)
Summary:

"There are bees on my roof. Bees, Pep."

"I think you mean my roof, as the building belongs to Stark Industries, of which I am CEO."

"The important word in that sentence was bees."

(Or: the one in which Pepper accidentally introduces Bucky to gardening therapy.)

Reccer's Notes: An excellent fic with the improbable premise of Bucky + gardening. Pepper, too, was remade without her consent.

Husbandry and Haberdashery by
sabinlagrande
Length: 1.543 words
Fandom: Avengers
Rating: PG-13
Relationship(s): Clint/Phil
Summary: Sometimes when Tony learns something new, it benefits all mankind. This is definitely not one of those times.
Reccer's Notes: I can see this as totally realistic scenario of tower life, actually. In which Tony attempts to troll Clint and Phil only to have it backfire on him spectacularly. Mostly because they're on to him.

It's that goddamn F*cky fic, and it is not my fault by
Strange_radio
Length: 2.894 words
Fandom: Avengers
Rating: NC-17
Relationship(s): Steve/Bucky
Summary: Steve and Bucky defeat the soundproofing at Avengers Tower. The rest of the team congratulates them. Where by "congratulate" I mean "trolls them mercilessly." But, you know, in a team-building kind of way.
Reccer's Notes: This fic = TEARS OF LAUGHTER. And now with- wait, let me put this in bold for anyone scrolling by: and now with 2nd chapter from Steve's POV! It looks like there's a 3rd chapter forthcoming! *throws confetti* Seriously though, my embarrassment squick was whimpering in pain and I didn't even care.

Just Borrowing It by
chaya
Length: 1.497 words
Fandom: Avengers
Rating: PG-13
Relationship(s): Steve/Bucky (gen-ish)
Summary: There's no established way to join the Avengers. Or to get your best friend's attention.
Reccer's Notes: Post-CATWS, Bucky is largely recovered and occupying space in the tower. Things are going well it's just... he's bored. He finds a way to keep himself entertained. Whether it's Tony's or Steve's fault is up for debate. Funny and sweet.

fair market value by
lazulisong
Length: 1.208 words
Fandom: Avengers (Captain America) & xxxHolic
Rating: PG
Relationship(s): Steve/Bucky
Summary:

"you must have a wish," says the lady.

"i ain't got money," says bucky, still frozen in place. "i was just --"

Reccer's Notes: I totally blanked on the header, which mentioned the crossover aspect, but I'm not familiar with that fandom/character anyway, and then I skimmed the author's notes which mentioned hedgehog!Bucky and I was kind of expecting crack!fic? Which no, total misreading on my part, but after the fact it was all a bit hysterical because I really had no one to blame but myself. Definitely not crack!fic and really more along the lines of "omg ow ow ow mother of god ow". Gives painful purpose to Bucky's experiences.

it's a bittersweet ending (if you know what I mean) by
relenafanel
Length: 1.893 words
Fandom: Avengers
Rating: PG-13
Relationship(s): Steve/Bucky
Summary:

“I’ll see you around, Steve,” Bucky answers with a smirk, moving away from the counter with a wink.

Steve watches him go. Bucky’s wearing a pair of skinny jeans coated in something to give the appearance of leather. It’s impossible to not watch him go.

Reccer's Notes: "Working in the mall is rough, but it does have advantages. Small things, like store discounts, easily accessible bus routes, and the hot guy who works at Hot Topic." Annnnd that was the point at which I lost it.

Facts About the Moon by
Nanoochka
Length: 18.770 words
Fandom: Avengers
Rating: R
Relationship(s): Steve/Bucky
Summary:

Barnes sees him sketching birds in the back garden or doodling caricatures on napkins, even idly tracing shapes and patterns in the margins of the morning newspaper while he sips his coffee. Steve doesn’t bother to hide the sketchbooks filled with innocuous subjects or half-drawn comic panels, not even the ones containing profiles of Wilson or Agent Romanova, nor those of Agent Carter or their old compatriots from the war. Those he leaves strewn about for anyone to find, hiding in plain sight.

Never Barnes, though; never Bucky. His rendering is as utterly absent from Steve’s sketches as the Winter Soldier is from history.

Reccer's Notes: Gorgeous and complicated. Barnes, Bucky, Soldier - Nanoochka does a careful, but deliberate, dance through his POV as he tries to navigate his own mental landscape and the then/now of what he's seeing, both what he knows of himself and what he sees of Steve. The interactions between him and Steve in the beginning scene in particular, the guilt/anger/remorse/lack thereof, are all beautiful shades of gray where neither is entirely right or wrong. A really well executed fic.

Dr. Potts, I Presume by
Siria
Length: 626 words
Fandom: Avengers
Rating: PG
Relationship(s): Tony/Pepper
Summary: "Dr Potts, I presume?" Tony said, making what Pepper was sure he thought was a gallant bow.
Reccer's Notes: Peppers is awarded an honorary doctorate. Tony is, as always, irrepressible. (Fortunately, Pepper already had an advanced degree in Tony Wrangling.)

the long slide from kingdom to kingdom by
gyzym
Length: 6.015 words
Fandom: Avengers
Rating: PG
Relationship(s): Steve/Bucky
Summary:

They want you to love the whole damn world but you won't,
you want it all narrowed down to one fleshy man in the bath,
who knows what to do with his body, with his hands.

-Richard Siken, Driving, Not Washing.

Reccer's Notes: Beautiful, long stretch of bittersweet and a gradual salvation.

Additional Note: I haven't gone through and bookmarked my favorites yet, but
melonbutterfly and
hannahrhen are doing Tag-Team: 30 Days of Steve/Bucky Porn. As long as you have registered for an Archive account, you can subscribe to the series and have updates delivered to your inbox (or, hey, just check back regularly). As the series description goes, "Two authors, Bucky Barnes, and Steve Rogers participate in the 30-Day OTP Porn Challenge. Here's the result!"
