On Tuesday Yahoo laid off the entire Delicious team and today it announced at a company all-hands meeting that it will be "sunsetting" Delicious, aka shutting it down, although there are no details yet on when or how, from any of my sources inside Yahoo. It could be months or years - although they'll almost certainly announce it ahead of time (at some point), like Geocities.
Entire entry [
here], along with mentions of Diigo and Pinboard. My main complaint about Diigo at one point was that it doesn't import the full text of the Delicious note field (since Delicious expanded its available note area). On the other hand, it imports everything else just fine, so if you have a limited number of bookmarks, it might be worth the effort to transfer them over and do the repairs from there. I've crossed the 4.000 bookmarks line, so I'm trying to avoid that. Diigo has a tiered payment system (Free - $20 Basic - $40 Premium) and Pinboard, which the post notes was started by a couple of ex-Delicious employees so I would assume some compatibility for imports, is a flat rate $6.89** with no ads. I can't complain about the ads or payment scale considering the site that's free and without ads is shutting down.
(** Apparently the one time cost for Pinboard is dependent on the number of users and the rush to sign up means the cost is going up. So you might want to give it a go sooner than later if you think it's the thing to try, but be prepared for server load issues. If nothing else, set up an account now and import later. I feel like I should send the Pinboard servers a nice ice bath.)
I have a free Diigo account as I already mentioned but unless I discover that it imports the notes field better at one of the paid levels, there's no sense for me to upgrade at this point. I'll most likely give Pinboard a go and report back.
Any other good alternatives?! It's not that I expect it to disappear tomorrow by any means, but I'd like to start making my choices and becoming accustomed to a new system as soon as possible. (Gah! Browser integration! All the comms with Delicious accounts! *hates on Yahoo*)

morgandawn notes "another feature that Diigo has that Pinboard does not is blog posting of links. But that both allow you to cache websites"
[Note: The caching of pages requires a Archival account at Pinboard, which costs $25/year, and Diigo will only cache 5 pages/month unless you at least upgrade to a basic account, which is $20/year.]
No question on the social aspect - Pinboard is specifically designed to not be a 'social' bookmarking site while Diigo has networks, et al. I think we're only looking at an interim solution in either case or fandom will be much poorer for it.
