dressing

I've always had trouble with cardigans. They seem like a useful kind of garment, but they haven't liked me. Other than a chunky rib knit men's one that i used to wear over another big jumper on cold school uniform days, they've never been part of my wardrobe, even though i sometimes dress up (particularly if I'm wearing a dress, maybe to a wedding or other posh do) and think "something other than a hoody, an office jacket or a scarf would really be useful here".
But then they just feel too Woman. Not me.

A couple of years i bought one at fair expense. Nice soft wool, beautiful pattern knitted in of little leaves in shades of green. I put it in my freezer and every so often tried it on with things and put it back in the freezer. Big sister came to stay and forgot her posh clothes for a meeting, so i lent it to her, and it looked right. So she got it for Christmas.

One of the things i got from my mum's room is a well-worn brown cotton cardigan. Suspect it was originally Big sister's. I've been wearing it with a few things and it's... fine.

Now i just bought two cardigans from Gap - thin ribbed mostly cotton things. They also look fine, from first trying them on at least. I don't look like I'm wearing someone else's clothes. In my new-found ability to casually carry off a skinny cardigan, I feel that i have finally attained womanhood.
